Commitment : The Manager of Marketing & Communications at KC Pet Project is a vital role that supports the Chief Communications Officer in executing the organization's strategic marketing / advertising / communication initiatives.

This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing a wide range of campaigns across social media, development, and adoption platforms.

The Manager of Marketing & Communications will oversee the day-to-day management of the organization's website, assist with public relations efforts, and lead the promotion of KC Pet Project's storytelling and marketing efforts through various technologies and media channels.

This role is central to fostering community engagement and advancing the mission of KC Pet Project through compelling and effective communication strategies.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Campaign Management
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute communication campaigns, including social media initiatives, development projects, and pet adoption initiatives throughout the year.
  • Lead major online campaigns such as KC Pet Project Day, Holiday Giving Initiatives, Giving Tuesday, as well as specialized campaigns (i.

e. KC Mega Match, Subaru partnerships, and the Derrick Nnadi campaign) ensuring widespread engagement and successful outcomes.

  • Oversee / assist in collecting and curating stories for use in social media, direct mail appeals, and fundraising campaigns from shelter operations and our Animal Services Division.
  • Marketing
  • Assist with strategies to increase brand awareness, adoptions and fundraising for the organization, driving traffic to digital and physical locations.
  • Participate in brainstorming new creative campaigns and identify new marketing opportunities.
  • Help track Key Performance Indicators; report and analyze e-newsletter and web traffic data and make strategic recommendations to improve communications and engagement.
  • Stay current on best practices and provide competitive analysis, industry trends, and assist in optimizing campaigns based on those insights.
  • Provide input on brand merchandise and e-commerce initiatives.
  • In conjunction with the Development Department’s fundraising campaigns, oversee the execution of all email campaigns to support the organization’s marketing goals.
  • Assist in writing articles for newsletters, and ensure the department captures photos and videos to support the content.
  • Media Relations & Community Engagement
  • Promote KC Pet Project’s pets and stories on television, radio, and other media platforms on local, national, and international levels.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with media partners to maximize positive exposure for the organization.
  • Coordinate community events or speaking opportunities for Animal Services Division leadership.
  • Website and Social Media Management
  • Oversee and manage the KC Pet Project website, ensuring content is up-to-date, appealing, user-friendly, and aligned with the organization's brand and goals.

Monitor site traffic and make recommendations for improvements / best practices as needed.

  • Manage all social media accounts for the shelter, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter (X), and YouTube, developing and implementing strategies to increase engagement and reach.
  • Assist various departments with monitoring and maintaining internal Facebook Groups.
  • Grants
  • Collaborate with the CEO and Chief Development Officer to ensure all communication activities align with grant requirements and support the fulfillment of grant objectives.
  • Team Leadership
  • Supervise and support the work of the marketing department coordinators, providing guidance and ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Collaborate closely with other team members across the organization to achieve cohesive and integrated communication strategies.
  • As a certified Service Enterprise organization, support KC Pet Project by leveraging community volunteers throughout the marketing organization to achieve operational efficiency and greater social impact.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly Impact Report data, include marketing and communications key metrics and graphics.
  • Actively contribute to the organization’s strategic goals through the commitment to the Human- Animal Support Services model and values.

Collaborate with other animal welfare marketing / communications professionals by sharing best practices and supporting new programs and services to keep more people and pets together.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of direct experience in communications, public relations, or a related field, preferably within a nonprofit or animal welfare organization.
  • Proven experience in managing social media accounts and coordinating media relations.
  • Experience working within the animal welfare sector or a related nonprofit field is highly desirable.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong creative writing and editing skills, with the ability to create engaging content for various platforms.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in WordPress and social media platforms, with a strong understanding of digital marketing principles.

Additional Requirements

  • Availability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness to travel locally for media appearances and fundraising events.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Comfortable working with animals of various species and sizes.

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed at the KC Campus for Animal Care, though work may also be performed in the field, in the community, or at offsite locations, as needed.
