The Opportunity :

The School of Medicine at Texas A&M University is seeking a Professor and Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development is a member of the senior leadership team of the school, working collaboratively with the central administration, department heads, center and institute directors, and faculty members to support and advance the strategic goals of the University, School, and department.

The School of Medicine is the largest of five Colleges / Schools at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center, which is based on the main university campus in Bryan / College Station, Texas and includes campuses distributed throughout the State of Texas.

Responsibilities for this position as Professor will include participation in one School of Medicine curriculum course and / or collaboration with an existing Research team, as well as academic service to the School of Medicine and Texas A&M University.

The assigned department for this individual will be based on their area of expertise. The Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development will have central oversight of the affairs and development of the School of Medicine faculty across five campuses and multiple sites and locations.

In their role, the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs provides mentorship and supervision to the staff and faculty in the School of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs and the Office of Professional Development.

They serve as the liaison between the university's office of faculty affairs, ensuring that new faculty policies and actions are effectively communicated.

They are responsible for implementing policy changes from the university's office of faculty affairs and ensuring compliance with all protocols and procedures mandated by Texas A&M University and the Texas A&M System.

Additionally, they develop and distribute faculty guidelines and policies specific to the school of medicine as needed. They provide oversight for faculty searches and hiring, conducting tenure reviews in collaboration with the hiring department and coordinating the credentialing process for new faculty hires.

They also coordinate faculty annual reviews, which involves reviewing performance evaluations and reporting any unsatisfactory performance to the dean and the vice provost for faculty affairs.

They oversee various review processes, including first-year, midterm, and reappointment reviews for department heads, as well as the post-tenure review process and endowed chair reviews.

As part of the promotion and tenure process, they conduct workshops for faculty, review and approve departmental guidelines, and coordinate college committee reviews for promotion and tenure, post-tenure review, and endowed chair evaluations.

They also assist in drafting promotion and tenure letters for the dean and attend P&T process review meetings with the provost and vice provost for faculty affairs.

In addition to these responsibilities, they plan and facilitate faculty development activities and coordinate the Faculty Development Leave program.

They review applications for emeritus / emerita status and provide consultation on faculty grievances when necessary. They support department heads and the dean in faculty retention procedures as directed.

They also handle various coordination tasks, such as partner placement, extensions for probationary reviews, external employment requests, faculty leaves of absence, and faculty joint appointments within the School of Medicine.

The Ideal Candidate :

  • MD, DO, PhD, EdD, JD or other equivalent professional degree
  • Record of scholarship commensurate with appointment as a tenured Professor of the School of Medicine.
  • Previous experience with Faculty Affairs and / or Faculty Development (e.g., Department Chair / Associate Chair)
  • Minimum of seven years administrative experience
  • Record of commitment to a culture of institutional stewardship and transparency, as well as efficient and effective business operations.

As a key leader at the Texas A&M School of Medicine, the new Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development will be expected to build on the successes of prior leadership, leveraging the talents of a diverse faculty, staff, and students, to chart continued success and increase the national and international reputation of the School's research and educational endeavors.

The Organization :

Founded as part of Texas A&M University with a charter class of 32 students in 1977, Texas A&M University School of Medicine is the largest of five health professions schools within Texas A&M Health and is one of the fastest growing academic health institutions in the nation.

The school enrolls over 700 medical students and over 70 graduate students. Headquartered in Bryan-College Station, it is also home to campuses in Temple, Round Rock, Dallas, and Houston, Texas.

Numerous other clinical teaching sites across the state serve to educate medical students, including those in Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and Fort Hood, as well as several rural sites.

The School of Medicine has the 3rd largest graduate medical education footprint in the state with approximately 1,500 trainees.

There are sponsored graduate medical education programs in family medicine, sports medicine, and psychiatry - and a rapidly growing number (approximately 140) of affiliated residency and fellowship programs across the state.
