Track design engineers are professionals responsible for designing and planning railway tracks, including commuter rail, freight, metro systems, tramways, and other forms of rail transportation.
Their primary role is to ensure the safe and efficient movement of trains by designing tracks that meet technical standards, operational requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
As a Track Design co-op, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and contribute to the design and planning of railway tracks.
Under the guidance of experienced track design engineers, you will be involved in various aspects of track design, analysis, and documentation.
This co-op will provide valuable insights into the field of transportation engineering and the intricacies of track design.
This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting assigned department(s) and / or project(s) by performing basic engineering related tasks which may reflect elements of standard post-secondary engineering curriculum.
Below are examples of some of the work you may be involved in.
- Assist in track layout and alignment analysis, considering factors like curvature, superelevation, and transitions between straight and curved sections.
- Support clearance analysis by assessing the space between trains and adjacent structures, ensuring safe and obstruction-free train operations.
- Contribute to the selection and specification of track components, such as rails, sleepers (ties) , fasteners, and ballast depth, while considering project requirements and industry standards.
- Aid in the design of track grading and drainage profiles, ensuring proper water management and track stability.
- Collaborate with track design engineers and other professionals to integrate track designs with overall project plans.
- Participate in the preparation of detailed design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Support track maintenance and rehabilitation considerations by contributing to long-term maintenance planning and design optimization.
The position is based out of our Chelmsford office. Relocation and housing are NOT provided for this position.
What You’ll Do :
Assists engineer teams in various tasks and duties.
Assists Engineer with research, development and design of projects.
Assists Engineer with the preparation of engineering drawings and documents as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need :
High School Diploma / GED or equivalent plus current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program
What You’ll Bring :
Understands engineering, geometric, and algebraic principles at a basic level.
Shows proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Accepts and applies direction from peers and supervisors.
Obtains an understanding of introductory shop drawing and submittal procedures and requirements.
Ability to perform basic engineering calculations
Ability to organize information for use in drawings or other documents
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
Willingness to learn and take initiative in a dynamic work setting.
What We Prefer :
Completion of 2 years of post-secondary Civil Engineering program
AutoCAD and / or MicroStation experience
Strong interest in transportation and infrastructure
