Director of Membership and the PEM Fund

Reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer, the Director of Membership and the PEM Fund oversees the strategic direction, communication, structure, and administration of the Membership and Annual Fund programs, securing $1M+ in unrestricted revenue in support of PEM's mission.

The director will develop and facilitate the solicitation and renewal cycle for 6,000+ membership and annual fund households, ensuring the highest levels of member and donor satisfaction, identifying upgrade opportunities, cultivating entry level philanthropic support, and improving retention in all programs.

The director will evaluate current strategy and giving levels, creative collateral, and marketing materials to identify areas of opportunity for increased support, engagement with members, and overall program growth.

The director will oversee the work of the Development Coordinator in conjunction with the Director of Institutional Giving.

The director will be a key member of the Development team supporting the Museum's $30M+ operating budget and the annual Development strategic goals.

The director will work closely with fellow directors on the development team and the CPO, to determine strategy and strengthen overall fundraising efforts for PEM.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Co-management of Development Coordinator with Director of Institutional Giving;
  • Meet stated membership and annual fund goals, created in collaboration with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and Finance;
  • Facilitate Member and PEM Fund solicitation and renewal communication cycles, meeting or exceeding acquisition and retention metrics;
  • Draft and send monthly member e-communications;
  • Identify and develop membership innovations regarding levels, benefits, and best practices. Evaluate current program strategy and giving levels, creative collateral, marketing materials of membership program to identify areas of opportunity to broaden audiences and increase support and engagement with members, annual fund donors, and new affinity groups;
  • Manage and collaborate with direct report in support of achieving Membership and PEMl Fund goals for the department;
  • Suggest and implement strategies for growth : review goal progress, implement new processes where necessary, and provide feedback on how to refine and project manage tasks;
  • Lead in a team-oriented environment;
  • Work closely with Individual Giving Officer, EIMA on a monthly upgrade strategy to identify and solicit new and upgraded gifts from individuals;
  • Work with Director of Donor Engagement and Events on Member events and programs;
  • Facilitate Member events and programs with appropriate curatorial and education staff;
  • Work closely with Director of Learning and Community Engagement and team to support their programs that will attract and engage new cohorts and community partnerships;
  • Collaborate with Visitor Engagement team in a variety of initiatives, including the facilitation of onsite membership conversion and PEM Fund gifts;
  • Report out on membership progress towards goals and other satisfaction and engagement metrics;
  • Oversee online Membership and PEM Fund marketing and transaction web pages with the support of the Director of Development Operations;
  • Develop a coordinated matrix of communication, solicitation, and stewardship strategies involving email, direct mail, digital platforms, and member engagement, all focused on shaping a sustainable tradition of annual support and achieving dollar goals for the Museum;

Evaluate current program strategy and giving levels, creative collateral, marketing materials of membership program to identify areas of opportunity to broaden audiences and increase support and engagement with members, annual fund donors and new affinity groups.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in membership, annual fund, and or development, specifically in museum or museum related field;
  • Strong understanding of direct marketing helpful;
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively when problem solving;
  • Deep understanding of membership and annual fund programs at cultural institutions and programmatic best practices;
  • Demonstrated ability to meet target metrics;
  • Excellent data management and reporting skills;
  • Familiarity with fundraising and philanthropy and its critical role in institutions;
  • Strong collaboration and influencing skills; excellent oral and written communication skills and impeccable attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Familiarity with Tessitura or other development database software / systems;
  • Experience with Email Service Providers, such as Wordfly;
  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Excel;
  • Ability to interface productively with staff and visitors across the department and museum;
  • Management and team building experience;
  • Good judgment and ability to be discreet and handle confidential information;
  • Proven problem-solving and planning capabilities;
