This position will be responsible for the administrative management, oversite, budgeting, and leadership of the Education and Research programs for the Department of Medicine.

Education

The Senior Director provides administrative oversight to the Internal Medicine office of Medical Education and is responsible for all UME and GME activities that pertain to the functioning of this office.

These activities include the supervision of operations, regulatory compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and other accreditation organizations, Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), and Medicare, staff education, policy and procedure coordination, compliance, accreditation, and budgeting.

The Senior Director reports to the Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Medicine and manages departmental activities to meet clerkship, residency and fellowship program and hospital needs and objectives in accordance with operating policies and accreditation requirements.

He / she provides overall direction to managers in planning, directing and organizing their respective areas and ensures the efficient, economic, and quality performance of GME.

This position requires the ability to work independently, use sound judgment, interpret and disseminate hospital policies and procedures to all ACGME and non-ACGME programs, and analytically review data to assist in the operational decision process.

Research

Responsible for oversight of Department of Medicine federal, foundation, industry sponsored and institutional awards. Provides management and operational leadership for research areas and endowment income.

Interfaces with granting agencies, sponsors and external collaborators. Responsible for providing leadership, oversight, training, and central resource support of the research administration activities in the Department of Medicine.

The Director will work closely with BMC and BU administrative and academic departments to maintain and enhance DOMs research portfolio.

Finance and Administration

Monitoring & Reporting : Provides monthly reporting of research performance against benchmarks. Works collaboratively with Vice Chair of Research and Vice Chair of Finance and Administration on implementation of strategic plan.

Monitors progress of strategic initiatives.

Budgeting : Annual budgeting of Department of Medicine Research Cores and Research endowment funds. Management of endowment income vs expenditures in adherence to regulatory requirements, restrictions and departmental goals.

Performance measurement : Supports and measures the individual development and growth of direct and indirect reports, to ensure research compliance.

Identifies the need for performance improvement plans. Manages, mentors and inspire high-performing research support staff.

Promotes a culture of accountability that contributes to the success of the organization.

Process Improvement : Optimizes the performance of pre- and post-award research support and administration in the department relative to timeliness, accuracy and compliance.

Leads monthly meetings with Research ADs focusing on opportunities for improvement through discussion groups, information sharing and feedback.

Leadership and Strategic Planning

The Administrative Director provides leadership for continuous service and quality improvement, innovation and staff empowerment, and leads efforts to demonstrate effective internal and external customer relations in the areas of Research and Education Partners with Senior Leadership, Section Chiefs and Section ADs to implement newly developed and currently existing strategic initiatives for research and education.

Provide clear strategies to achieve the vision, goals and objectives. Builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders at BU and BMC including other institutional departments.

Required Skills

Requires a master's degree and at least 8 years of progressively advanced administrative management; with at least 2 years in an academic medical center environment.

1. Knowledge of Graduate Medical Education and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (preferred, but not required)

2. Proven ability to translate a strategic plan into operational policy.

3. Demonstrated track record of management of personnel and fiscal resources.

4. Leadership ability to guide, direct, and mentor a multi-layered staff.

5. Capable of program development, implementation and evaluation

6. Capable of long-range program planning that involves complex decision-making tasks.

7. Expert verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.

8. Must be exceptionally organized to prioritize a multitude of diverse activities so as to meet strict deadlines.

9. Dedicated team player with the willingness and desire to learn and grow within the organization.

10. Ability to anticipate objections and plan appropriate responses; ability to perform and lead effectively in stressful situations and to solve problems as they occur.

11. Professional in conduct and appearance.

12. Proficient with standard software used in healthcare settings (i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web browser, etc.) and ability to learn new software (i.e. New Innovations)
