Position description
Dr. Henri Drake in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine is seeking a motivated postdoctoral scholar to use innovative object detection and water mass transformation methods to investigate the physical drivers of extreme Marine Heatwaves.
The postdoc will collaborate closely with another UCI postdoc and co-PI Dr. Gaël Forget at MIT.
The selected candidate will be expected to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of marine heatwaves events in numerical ocean models (global ECCOv4 and regional eddy- and tide-resolving MOM6) and observations;
to employ water mass transformation budgets to identify their diabatic drivers; and to communicate their results through peer reviewed publications, conference presentations, open-source code development, and open data sharing.
They will also be expected to contribute to a supportive and vibrant group culture and mentor undergraduate and doctoral students in the group.
Position perks :
This is a two-year position that is renewable, pending good progress and available funding. The salary will range from 66, to 80, USD per year, scaling with experience as detailed and includes generous benefits.
Perks of the ESS department and UCI Campus :
The Ocean and Climate Dynamics group led by Dr. Henri Drake uses theory and numerical simulation to study multi-scale dynamical ocean processes that are particularly relevant to Earth System dynamics and anthropogenic change.
The group benefits from close collaborations with both ocean model developers and sea-going oceanographers.
The Earth System Science Department at UC Irvine is highly interdisciplinary. It includes 28 faculty with broad expertise, all devoted to the study of the Earth as a coupled system.
UC Irvine is located in Orange County, about halfway between the diverse metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Diego.
It is a sunny and pleasant place to live, surrounded by beaches, parks, mountains.
