General Summary :

Responsible for providing treatment services regarding speech / language programming for all center-based students and as needed, home based clients in the areas of oral motor, speech and articulation, use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), receptive language, expressive language, and pragmatics.

Treatment must include the use of evidence-based behavioral methodology to support student learning (e.g., principles of reinforcement, prompting, modeling, shaping).

Provide initial and ongoing trainings on speech and language programming for all Center-Based staff and Outreach staff as necessary.

Essential Skills and Qualifications :

  • Master’s Degree in Speech / Language Pathology
  • Certification of Clinical Competence (CCC)
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Works with the IEP team to create goals.
  • Experience across a variety of age ranges and abilities
  • Provide oversight and supervision of SLPA

Essential Competencies :

  • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates advanced understanding of behavioral principles and instructional strategies for students with autism and other behavior disorders.
  • Demonstrates advanced understanding of instructional strategies for students with autism and other behavior disorders.
  • Knowledge of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)

Performance Expectations :

The Speech-Language Pathologist consults with instructors / therapists on behavioral treatment and speech and language programming and direct treatment for individual clients through :

Direct Implementation of Services :

  • Work directly with clients, ages 3 to 21 years of age in a classroom program(s).
  • Periodic observations of individual students
  • Skill probes with individual students
  • Administration of assessments as needed for programming and Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) development.
  • Provide both indirect and direct therapies.

Assessments :

Multidisciplinary and individual assessments, as needed and as required by the IEP.

Classroom consultation :

  • Consultation on development of speech and language programming
  • Collaborates with staff on individual clients as needed.
  • Provides initial and ongoing trainings for all staff in the areas of speech and language as well as behavior modification techniques and other trainings as assigned by supervisor or as deemed necessary by evaluation of educational instructors’ skill levels.
  • Staff trainings on specific speech and language programs

Clinical management :

  • Documentation of assessment results in writing.
  • Review of data on speech and language programs
  • Development of IEP recommendations for all students
  • Review of IEP speech and language current levels and goals for all students

Other Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Participates in all relevant meetings regarding students’ speech and language and / or behavior programming.
  • Weekly attendance of team meetings for ongoing case consultation.
  • Participates in annual crisis management training as well as CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Completes annual requirements for licensure / certification including continuing education credits for both speech / language pathology.
  • Holds confidential all knowledge of students and their families.
  • Conforms to dress code commensurate with the appropriate program requirements.
  • Effective implementation of crisis and physical intervention procedures
  • Review of data on SLP programming

Physical Requirements of the Job :

The incumbent typically will work across multiple environments using a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties.

Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the workday. The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear;

frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle, or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to 50 pounds.

The incumbent may be involved in crisis situations across clients and must be willing to be trained in crisis management and perform the duties required in the current training system.
