Latin School of Chicago is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and creative Middle School Mandarin Teacher (grades 5-8) who is passionate about languages and cultures and committed to connecting with and supporting students.

Strong candidates will be well-versed in proficiency-based instruction and educational technology and have demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity, collaboration, and professionalism.

This position is for October through early November 2024 and mid April to May 2025. The Mandarin teacher will teach one section of 5th grade, one section of 6th grade, one section of 7th grade, and one section of 8th grade.

The teacher will also serve as a homeroom teacher.

Responsibilities :

• Plan and teach a Mandarin curriculum 90% or more in the target language for grades 5 through 8
• Use the ACTFL Can-Do Statements along with the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines to structure and assess student learning
• Supervise students in non-classroom activities as assigned and scheduled, including supervisions such as lunch, study hall, and recess duty
• Attend required department, cohort, faculty, and school meetings
• Serve as an advisor to 10-12 students
• Communicate effectively as a team member with fellow faculty in the grade level, department, and middle school as a whole
• Cultivate an inclusive and supportive climate for all students, particularly students from underrepresented backgrounds
• Use educational technology as a vital part of teaching
• Engage in professional development that is appropriate for the role and aligned with school and department goals and philosophies.

Qualifications

• Master's degree preferred, Bachelor's degree required, ideally in Mandarin or Education
• At least 3 years teaching experience, ideally in a middle school environment
• Native or near-native language skills and ability to appropriately facilitate classes in the target language
• Knowledge of Mandarin-speaking cultures and / or experience living abroad
• Affinity for middle school-aged students
• Ability to incorporate social-emotional learning strategies
• Creation of lessons and units drawing from authentic materials and grounded in Backward Design
• Demonstrated commitment to inclusivity, collaboration, and professionalism
• Successful experience implementing a communicative approach and a variety of second-language acquisition methodologies
• Experience designing curriculum using ACTFL standards and proficiency targets
• Strong technology skills and the ability to fully embed technology into the instructional program

Physical Requirements :

• Able to stand for long periods at a time
• Able to speak clearly so listeners can understand; able to understand others
• Able to see details of people and objects more than a few feet away
