Position Start Date 8 / 29 / 2024 Salary / Wage $20.37 per hour Terms / Schedule 5.75 hours per school day; 10 months; school calendar Appointment Type Part Time Description The Special Education Assistant will assist the Special Education Teacher in meeting the diversified needs of students with various disabilities.

As a part of this assignment, you will be required to assist in classroom modifications, communicate with regular and special education staff, provide structure and feedback, and may work with other students as assigned.

Bilingual (Spanish / English) applicants are encouraged to apply, but this is not a requirement; we are hiring monolingual and bilingual applicants.

Examples of duties may include, but not be limited to the following :

  • Assist in communication throughout the school day in a variety of settings (recess, lunch, peer interactions, emergency drills) as stated in the IEP.
  • At the direction of the teacher, work on academic, communication, social, and self-help skills.
  • Assist the teacher in behavior management and classroom maintenance activities.
  • Assist the teacher in providing instructional activities and reinforcement for special education students.
  • Physically assist with students including lifting as needed.
  • Supervise students during structured and unstructured times at the direction of the teacher.
  • Implement behavior management strategies for a student or a group of students.
  • Assist in the behavior management of student(s) by carrying out plans for student(s) and supervising individual students in both structured and unstructured settings.
  • Assist with personal care procedures as needed for students (ex. dressing, toileting, feeding, etc.).
  • Other assignments as directed by the teacher or principal of the building. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality relating to students and families.
  • Must obtain CPR and first aid certification within the first few months of employment.

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE :

Must be eligible for or possess a teaching license or Special Education Program Aide license #070 which requires three years of experience with children, or three years of college coursework, or a combination equivalent to three years.

LANGUAGE SKILLS :

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written language form.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, federal, state, and / or DPI regulations and handbooks.
  • Communicating with students in a way which fosters the development of a positive self-image.
  • Exercising good judgment in dealings with students, parents, other staff and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS :

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY :

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and effectively solve problems.
  • Utilizing problem-solving techniques in correcting and changing student behavior.
  • Using discretion in handling confidential information about students.
  • Modeling and reinforcing positive behaviors which are expected of students.

  • This job is performed in a school setting both indoors (classrooms / cafeteria / hallways) and outdoors.
  • Physical assistance with students including lifting as needed.
