The Speech Pathologist I Clinician is a novice to an advanced beginner level of practice, particularly as it relates to a hospital based setting.
The Speech Pathologist I is able to perform assessments and therapeutic interventions with the routine patient population.
They support team endeavors by performing department and / or team tasks, problem solving and intervention skills.
The Speech Pathologist I may orient other allied health professionals to their field upon the successful completion of their CFY year with the approval of the Department Manager.
Speech Pathologist I Clinician may provide student experiences per approval of the Coordinator of Student Supervision.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire : License (or licensure eligible) from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) or Clinical Fellowship Year candidate Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment : Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a SLP Current CCC in SLP.
For CFY incumbents, completion of CFY and awarded a CCC, at conclusion of 1st year of employment CPR certification Experience REQUIRED : New graduate / CFY’s to SLP’s with less than two (2) years of experience Strong Clinical Fellowship Year candidates will be considered Previous clinical experience with evaluation / treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic / cognitive communication disorders and swallowing disorders Previous experience performing swallow studies including MBS and bedside assessments Previous experience planning and executing treatment Experience PREFERRED : Previous experience with trach management as related to swallowing and communication disorders Previous experience managing complex swallowing and / or communication, linguistic / cognitive disorders Previous work experience in a critical care setting Previous experience with computer-based documentation systems.
- Education / training REQUIRED : Masters Degree from an ASHA accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology Competes required learning exchange courses Education / training PREFERRED : Clinical rotations during graduate training in medical setting Independent action(s) required : Performs the following for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and / or swallowing disorders - schedule frequency and intensity of therapy;
- select assessment instruments and administer assessment; interpret results; complete documentation; plan and carry out treatment strategies;
- develop long- and short-term goals; perform patient / family / staff education; report at patient / family / team conferences;
and terminate therapy when appropriate. Supervisor or SLP II or higher provides advice / guidance / training regarding clinical skills, professional practice, ethical behaviors, billing, caseload management, educational opportunities, documentation and patient care for patient issues or when requested by staff.
Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable) : SLPs with their CCC’s may provide student supervision if deemed competent to do so by Department Manager or Coordinator of Student Interns.
Additional position requirements : Ability to cross cover units not assigned as SLP’s primary units of responsibility, after being oriented to unit and deemed competent for that patient population (if significantly different from typical unit assignments);
this includes covering outpatient, rehab and inpatient units in addition to SLP’s primary location assignment. Possible weekend rotations required.
