ABOUT THE POSITION

Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. (VHB) is seeking a talented Project Engineer to join our growing Transit & Rail practice. The position is located in our Wethersfield, CT office.

VHBs passionate professionals include engineers, scientists, planners, and designers who partner with public and private clients in the transportation, real estate, institutional, and energy industries, as well as federal, state, and local governments.

The Transit & Rail Project Engineer will be part of a design team supporting a variety of railroad and rail / bus transit projects.

The candidate should have expertise and experience in the railroad and / or rail / bus transit industry and a desire to grow in the business.

Responsibilities

  • Perform civil design on a variety of transit and rail projects including stations, track structure and drainage, alignment geometry, grade crossings, , layover / service / support facilities, as well as maintenance of equipment (MOE) and maintenance of way (MOW) yards
  • Support the Project Development process including preparation of conceptual level designs, feasibility studies, planning studies, and supporting documentation
  • Perform inspections, evaluations, and assessments of rail and transit infrastructure
  • Develop specifications, cost estimates, and project schedules
  • Prepare technical reports and analyses
  • Assist in the development of construction bid documents
  • Provide design support services during construction
  • Work effectively and collaboratively in a multi-discipline team environment

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong technical design skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and analytical skills
  • Strong capability in the use of computer applications including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Experience with the MicroStation CADD platform is preferred but candidates with AutoCAD experience and the desire to learn MicroStation will be considered

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in railroad and / or rail / bus transit and engineering design
  • BS in civil engineering
  • Clear understanding of railroad and rail transit design requirements including AREMA recommended practices
  • Familiarity with track, station, layover facility and general civil engineering
  • Engineering in Training certification preferred
