ANIMAL CARE WORKER
SUMMARY
PAY : $15 / hr
This position performs all aspects of humane animal care duties to ensure animal safety and well-being, manages kennel space, and provides quality customer service by providing the public with assistance and accurate information regarding Animal Management & Welfare policies, programs, and procedures.
This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather as well as overtime as necessary by the department.
This position is considered weather-essential personnel.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Cleans, disinfects, and maintains shelter areas, including feeding dishes, towels, and other peripheral equipment as assigned.
- Feeds, waters, bathes, dips, and exercises animals.
- Performs animal intake, claiming, and adoption activities as assigned.
- Provides humane sheltering services in compliance with State minimum standards and Animal Management & Welfare policies.
- Performs facility maintenance and repairs as assigned.
- Safely and humanely handles animals of unknown health and temperament.
- Monitors the physical conditions of animals and advises supervisors of ill or injured animals.
- Assists in administering shots and other medications to animals as directed.
- Assists in euthanizing animals and properly disposing of the remains.
- Ensures the safety of animals and people in the shelter.
- Performs animal inventories, as assigned.
- Prepares rabies specimens.
- Assists in unloading trucks, stocking shelter areas, and storing materials and supplies.
- Assists in the preparation, transport, and documentation of specimens for rabies testing.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to safely handle animals, including those with unknown health and temperament.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes is priorities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with other City employees and the public.
Ability to use hand tools and occasionally repair small equipment at the shelter.
Good interpersonal skills, particularly in dealing with fellow employees and the general public.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid TX Driver's License is preferred.
- Animal service work experience is preferred.
Physical Demands
The employee is also required to climb, crawl, crouch, feel, finger, grasp, handle, pull, push, reach, speak, stand, stoop, see, and walk.
Also requires the ability to make rational decisions and perform repetitive motions.
Works in all weather conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
