A Day In The Life

The Senior Manager, Business Tax is a hands-on leader for pass-through tax across The Friedkin Group's large operating companies. You will own compliance and planning for S corporations and operating partnerships with multi-state footprints; where complexity comes from scale of operations and transactions, not necessarily the volume of entities / K-1s. Serving as the business tax expert and advisor to the businesses and shareholders with broad cross-functional and stakeholder influence, you will work closely with the tax leadership team on the business tax function of the tax department to meet the expanding needs of the organization. As part of a collaborative family office team, you will also partner closely with business leaders, Finance, and the Family Office. You will be responsible for a global approach to all business tax planning and reporting and the most tax efficient structures for the shareholders. This role is designed as a path to Director.

As a Sr Mgr, Business Tax you will :

  • Lead accurate, timely filed business tax returns (with a focus on Form 1120S), quarterly tax projections, and tax provisions.
  • Manage multi-state apportionment, composite / withholding as applicable, sales & use considerations, and franchise tax.
  • Coordinate and monitor state, federal, and sales tax audits, if any.
  • Working with the tax leadership team you will specialize in the operations, business plans and ongoing initiatives of the businesses to provide consultative tax planning and drive value through tax optimization, for example, evaluating 163(j), §199A, basis and distribution planning (S-corporations and partnership), §754 / §743(b) where relevant, and accounting method changes (e.g., §263A capitalization, inventory / LIFO).
  • Advise the businesses regarding the tax efficient execution of transactions and potential business opportunities including strategic tax planning for acquisitions and divestitures of businesses.
  • Standardize and automate workflows (data intake, apportionment, e-file, workpapers); champion quality and cycle-time improvements. Work with stakeholders across the organization to collaborate on initiatives and ensure optimal tax structuring and considerations for the businesses and shareholders.
  • Research complex tax issues and summarize results in a concise manner to communicate to management.
  • Work closely with others in the Tax Department to ensure that the tax compliance of the businesses is an accurate depiction of facts and circumstances and that any tax planning has been implemented.
  • Work closely with the Family Office to ensure the alignment of tax positions taken and communicate tax implications that will impact the shareholders.
  • Monitor tax law changes, proposals, court decisions, and IRS and state rulings. Evaluate their effects and potential ramifications; determine how to minimize tax consequences to the organization and the family.
  • Lead and develop a small team; set priorities, review work, and coach for growth.
  • What We Need From You

  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited four-year college or university Req and
  • Master's Degree Pref
  • 7-9 years experience including at least 7 years in public accounting Required
  • In Federal business tax matters have a strong technical command of S-corporations and partnership rules (allocations, basis, distributions), and working knowledge of SALT impacts for operators
  • Strategic business structuring, and transaction planning
  • Research, modeling / forecasting
  • Ability to analyze and communicate complex tax issues to stakeholders outside the Tax Department
  • Strategic thinker, proactive, and detailed oriented
  • Leadership & interpersonal / communication skills, ability to work closely with others and cultivate relationships as the business unit liaison
  • Skilled with identifying and implementing process improvements

While performing the duties of the job, the associate is required on a daily basis to analyze and interpret data, communicate, and remain in a stationary position for a significant amount of the work day and frequently access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The associate is regularly required to move about the office and around the corporate campus. The associate must frequently move up to 10 pounds and occasionally move up to 25 pounds.
