We are seeking a dynamic leader who is passionate about advancing the firm’s and our client’s interests through strategic and proactive advocacy.

The Chief Advocacy Officer reporting to our Managing Director, Chief Legal Officer, will partner closely with each business unit and our clients to identify legislative priorities and will develop a strategic plan to move those priorities forward through lobbying, grassroots engagement, internal and external education campaigns, policy related communications, research, engagement with trade associations, by forming strategic coalitions, etc.

This role will oversee all government relations activities on behalf of LPL Financial at all levels of government : federal, state, and local, including oversee the firm’s Political Action Committee and the firm’s relationships with trade associations and other key partners.

This individual will have a proven track record of creating innovative, industry-leading strategies and programs, and will need to be comfortable operating in a collaborative, fast-paced and matrix environment.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead and oversee LPL Financial’s engagement in state and federal legislative and government affairs nationally, including :

  • Leading and overseeing the development and execution of LPL’s advocacy strategies (e.g. develop an annual plan, calendar and budget which maps out the advocacy agenda)
  • Identifying legislative and policy priorities through close and proactive internal stakeholder engagement.
  • Developing and maintaining strategic relationships to enhance the company’s profile with policymakers and their staff, working closely with stakeholders and allies.
  • Formulating and executing policy advocacy and identifying developments that might impact the firm on a broad range of issues.
  • Managing a multi-issue policy portfolio, including analyzing relevant legislative and regulatory and developing company positioning.
  • Representing LPL Financial externally with key stakeholders (including trade associations, regulators, legislators, special purpose coalitions, etc).
  • Effectively manages the LPL PAC
  • Partnering closely with Legal, Compliance, and Risk to identify trends that may impact the advocacy agenda

Provide guidance to corporate senior leadership by :

  • Informing senior leadership and developing executive communications on federal policy matters.
  • Educating cross functional leaders on legislative / regulatory changes that impact business activity and providing guidance as they implement compliance strategies.

Support other Government Affairs activities and projects, including :

  • Identifying, shaping and / or creating opportunities at public events to educate policymakers about LPL Financial to bolster the firm, our clients and the industry’s reputation.
  • Developing or overseeing the creation of content for internal and external communications related to policy developments, in partnership with the regulatory communications lead.
  • Supporting and guiding the Government Relations team in executing the government affairs advocacy objectives as well as ad hoc policy issues as they arise.
  • Executing a clear owner engagement plan on key policy initiatives and advocacy efforts at the federal level.

The Ideal Candidate :

  • Bachelor’s degree in government affairs or a related field preferred
  • 15+ years of experience working in a federal legislative office, in a legislative affairs or policy role within a government agency, political campaign, or in a government relations role, or with a mix of government, campaign and private sector experience preferred.
  • Fluency with the federal political and legislative processes, as well as experience with grassroots and coalition management.
  • Ability to analyze political trends and identify political opportunities to advance our position.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use data to drive decision-making.
  • Exceptional leadership and team management and development abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with senior leaders and employees.
  • Exceptional presentation and public speaking skills are essential, as this key position will represent LPL on issues to internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Demonstrated a proven record of effective leadership and management and ability to effectively manage a staff of advocacy professionals with a skill for fostering a collaborative environment.

Pay Range :

280,000-420,000 / yearActual base salary varies based on factors, including but not limited to, relevant skill, prior experience, education, base salary of internal peers, demonstrated performance, and geographic location.
