Job Summary

We are seeking a versatile and creative Game Artist to join our team in a .75 FTE position. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in 2D design and concept art, and will contribute to enhancing the visual experience of our games. This role requires proficiency in character development, poster design, and graphic design, with the ability to work across a variety of art styles. Expertise in industry-standard project management tools and artistic software—such as Figma, ProCreate, and Adobe Creative Suite—is essential.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Conceptualizes, plans, designs, and executes multimedia solutions for a specific work unit that may be used through various platforms in collaboration with stakeholders and other content creation staff
  • Develops and facilitates trainings for staff and customers regarding technology options and best practices
  • Tracks and manages timelines and deliverables related to communication projects
  • Develops communication, event, and marketing strategies and materials to align with the overall work unit strategic initiative
  • Contributes to the development of communication, event, and marketing materials to fit into the overall strategy of the work unit
  • Directs operational activities for multiple communication platforms and posts content within a work unit that may include websites, social media, written / illustrative communications, and online tools

Department

Field Day Lab is a research and development group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison that creates educational games and digital tools for teaching and learning. Their focus is on designing interactive experiences that blend game-based learning with academic research, aiming to engage students and teachers in subjects such as science, history, and social studies. The lab collaborates with educators, scientists, and other researchers to develop these digital tools, often grounded in real-world data and classroom environments.

Compensation

Minimum : $55,000 annually. Commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid time off, health / dental / vision / life insurance, tax-advantaged savings accounts, and participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) pension fund.

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in game art, concept art, or related fields.
  • Strong proficiency in 2D illustration, concept art, and character / environment design.
  • Ability to work across multiple visual styles, from cartoonish to realistic.
  • Skilled in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator), and related tools.
  • Experience creating graphic design assets such as posters and marketing materials.
  • Familiarity with animation tools and project management platforms (e.g., Trello, Jira).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a portfolio showcasing diverse game art.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of UI / UX design principles in gaming.
  • Education

    Bachelors degree
