Job Summary

This position transports juveniles to designated destinations and maintains department vehicles.

Major Duties

The major duties include :

  • Maintaining department vehicles; performing weekly maintenance checks; scheduling maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintaining inventory of safety equipment.
  • Performing pre-trip vehicle safety inspections.
  • Maintaining mileage logs.
  • Reporting accidents or incidents involving department vehicles.
  • Planning trips, including timing and routes.
  • Inspecting and storing juvenile's personal belongings.
  • Transporting juveniles via van or bus to various designated destinations, including court, medical appointments, etc.
  • Inspecting restrooms and other areas during necessary stops for safety and security.
  • Performing any other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of department guidelines and procedures.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving techniques.
  • Knowledge of county roads and landmarks.
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of juvenile safety and security measures.
  • Skill in the safe operation of an assigned vehicle.
  • Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    The minimum qualifications required are :

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Must have at least one (1) year of experience in CDL driving.
  • Must possess a valid and current commercial driver's license (CDL).

    Complexity / Scope of Work

  • The work consists of related security, vehicle operation, and vehicle maintenance duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to drive a vehicle to transport juveniles to and from designated locations. Successful performance contributes to the safe and efficient provision of services.
  • Physical Demands / Work Environment

    Occasionally :

  • Moving oneself in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 5 pounds in all directions.
  • Operating machinery and / or power tools.
  • Working in low temperatures.
  • Working in high temperatures.
  • Working in outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
  • Working in small and / or enclosed spaces.
  • Constantly :

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Repeating motions that may include the use of wrists, hands, and / or fingers.
  • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Driving a County vehicle or a personal vehicle for County business.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting / standing.
  • Other Requirements / Information

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this job. Pre-employment drug / alcohol testing, Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and criminal background checks are required.
  • This position is not covered under Civil Service; however, all other Webb County policies apply.
