Shift : 7 : 00am to 3 : 30pm
Summary
The Pathologist Assistant monitors the specimens as they arrive in the gross room and assigns the dissection of the specimens to the residents according to their level of expertise and their workload.
Also, performs routine gross dissection as necessary in conjunction with the attending physician. Under the supervision of the Director of the Histology Laboratory, instructs pathology residents, residents rotating from other departments and medical students as the dissect gross specimens.
Aids in the collection of tissue for special procedures such as Flow Cytometry and other procedures, which need prompt selection of fresh tissue.
Responsibilities
Provides employee orientation and training in Autopsy techniques. Supervises and / or provides technical support for assigned autopsies.
Supervises the maintenance of the Autopsy / Morgue facilities, equipment and disposable supplies. Develops, implements and updates Autopsy Service Procedure Manual and the Autopsy / Morgue service portion of the Nursing Manual.
Performs gross description and dissection of surgical specimens. Obtains tissues for special studies such as chromosomal analysis, flow cytometry and molecular biology.
Assures JCAHO compliance for Histology and the Morgue. Obtains x-rays of surgical specimens when required. Assists Pathologists and Histology supervisor with other duties as required.
Provides technical direction in the Autopsy techniques and procedures for the first year Pathology Residents by providing general instruction in Autopsy techniques for individuals or groups viewing an Autopsy.
Coordinates support of photography services and needs as related to research and the instruction and clinical efforts of the department including the Surgical Pathology gross specimen photography service.
Develops and adheres to safety, security, and infection control policies and procedures, including universal precautions.
Ensures that employees respect the rights, privacy and property of others at all times, including the confidentiality of information, according to Administrative Policies and all applicable laws and regulations.
Conducts special work-related projects to evaluate instrumentation / methodology or to solve technical problems as needed.
Keeps abreast in technologies related to this field through literature review, professional meetings / seminars and participation in continuing education courses.

Experience
Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.
Education
Master's degree in related field is required.
Skill
Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications.
Credentials
Valid license or certification is required as needed, based on the job or specialty.
Working Conditions
Physical Requirements - Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds.
Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers.

Function is subject to inside environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures. Exposure to various environments such as : communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a hospital and medical office environment.
May also be exposed to needle sticks, airborne infections, medical gases, X-Ray, chemical exposures and other potential hazards.
