Job Summary

The Library Technical Assistant Evenings is a full time, fully in-person position that provides front-line customer service to our students, faculty, staff, administrators, and others as needed relating to circulation and reserve functions.

Essential Functions

Provide accurate and timely information and service from the 3 rd Floor Service Desk , online and / or by telephone regarding circulation, interlibrary loan, reserves, reference, and media etc.

Use library online and in hand tools to record data for library statistics.

Provide access to group study rooms for standing reservations and the scheduling of reservations.

Participate in library-related projects as needed

Maintain ongoing dialogue with department supervisor addressing issues or concerns promptly .

Follow department open and close procedures.

Engage in o ther duties as needed.

Competencies

Develop ed proficiency in all WMS / OCLC functions , i.e., check-in / checkout items, etc. , searching for library resources in Discovery and the Library website.

A bility to diagnose and resolve issues in an efficient and timely manner in line with library policies.

Ability to communicate and explain Circulation and Library policies and procedures and to refer patrons to the correct res ource.

Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including One Drive, Outlook, Word, Excel , Power Point , and Teams .

Excellent written and oral communication skills using various communication methods including email, phon e, virtual, and in person .

Excellent customer service skills.

Strong time management skills.

Ability to work independently and as a team member with various departments.

Ability to adapt and have flexibility in a changing work environment.

Willingness to learn skills and procedures pertaining to ci rculation, p rint , and eReserves through formal and on-the-job training.

Supervisory Responsibility

Responsible for student workers when needed in their immediate supervisor's absence through assigning tasks and reinforcing library policies and procedures.

Work Environment

This position operates in an academic library, including staffing Circulation Service Desk, and requires use of office equipment and technology like computers, printers, and scanners.

Demonstrate reliable and predictable punctuality and attendance as required for the position.

Physical Demands

Must be able to retrieve books from library stacks and move a book truck holding items .

Must be able to move and li ft materials for processing.

While performing duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, move about; sit; to carry work and use controls;

reach with hands and arms, climb stairs ; and use elevators.

The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs.

Specific vision abilities required by the employee include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vis ion, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus etc.

Environmental Conditions

Potential exposure to dust.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time 35 hour / week position . The standard work week is M-Thurs 2pm-10pm and Fri 1 : 30pm-8 : 00pm.

Due to the front-line circulation desk work, the job is fully on campus with no remote work options.

Required Education and Experience

1-2 years' experience in a circulation department in an academic or public library.

Experience using an Integrated Library System.

A ssociates degree.

Preferred Education and Experience

3-4 years' experience in a circulation department in an academic or public library.

Library public service experience.

Bachelor’s degree.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary for this position is $40,950. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education / training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
