LPN- Duke Primary Care

Occ Summary

Assume respons ibilities for direct nursing care of assigned patientsunder the supervis ion of a registered nurse or physician in patient carearea.

Provides nur sing services to patients and families in accordancewith the scope of th e LPN as defined by the North Carolina Board ofNursing.

Wor k Performed

Provide and document direct nursing care of assigned patients under thesupervision of a registered nurse or physician. Nursi ng care is guidedby the physician orders and the nursing plan of care.

P atient responseto care is reported to a registered nurse for evaluation, interventionand modification of the plan of care.

Assist other health c are personnelin the delivery of patient care.Assist physicians and other nursing personnel in the performance ofvarious diagnostic procedures.

Ev aluate nursing care with emphasis on nursing procedures and patientrespo nses; assist in the delivery of nursing care and selection ofnursing priorities.

Assist in the development and implementation of general policies andprocedures to provide for the emotional and physical comfort and saf etyof patients;

participate in the formulation of new policies.Participa te in maintaining the environment ofcare including equipmentand other m aterial resources.

Participate in the identification of clinical or opera tional performanceimprovement opportunities and assists in performance i mprovementactivities.

Assist with control of material resources and maintenance; assist inappraisal of effectiveness of material and equipment an d report anyequipment malfunctions to charge nurse.

Participate in in-ser vice education programs and other conferenceswithin the service.Assist i n the training of new employees.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Knowledge, Skills and Abiliti es

Knowledge of scope of licensed practical nurse, ability to de legate tonursing support staff.Considerable knowledge of the care and treatment of patients and specialprocedures that apply to practical nursin g.

Able to independently seekout resources and work collaboratively.Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors,healthcare tea m, physicians, administrators, leadership and others.

Able to teach patie nts and families in accordance with the nursing planof care.Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritizeinformation, tr eatment, and follow-up.

Competent in BLS and / or other specialized life su pport requirementsdesignated by work area or organization.Able to use fi ne motor skills.

Able to record activities, documentinterventions.Able t o use computer and learn new software programs.Able to navigate the enti ty to provide clinical care for patients.

Able to withstand prolonged sta nding and walking.Able to remain focused and organized.Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures that areapplicable to work performed.

Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in ad ministeringroutine and special treatments to patients.Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health andsafety precautions a pplicable to work in a hospital.

Working knowledge of infection control p rocedures and safety precautionsAbility to understand and follow oral an d written instructions.

Working knowledge and completion of appropriate J CAHO and otherregulatory requirements.Pre-employment Physical Capacity T esting Required

Current State of North Carolina LPN licensure is required.
