ROLE OVERVIEW :
Design and implement personalized treatment plans for individual patients using established Physical Therapy techniques and principles.
Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary treatment team. The Staff Physical Therapist is responsible to the Clinical Coordinator of Rehab Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES :
1. Review requisitions for Physical Therapy services.
a. Conduct interviews and evaluate patients' physical condition and requirements.
2. Develop tailored exercise and treatment programs for assigned patients.
a. Determine appropriate usage, application, and positioning of equipment, making necessary adjustments during the provision of treatments such as exercise, gait training, soft tissue mobility, whirlpool therapy, hot packs, ultrasound therapy, paraffin therapy, ice packs, electrical stimulation, and traction.
b. Educate patients on aspects of the program, including proper use of wheelchairs, crutches, canes, braces, and prosthetic appliances and devices.
c. Recommend program modifications or changes based on ongoing evaluations of patients' progress.
d. Consult with physicians as needed to discuss available alternatives.
3. Complete written documentation as required by professional standards and departmental procedures, including evaluation results, treatment plans, progress reports, and discharge summaries.
4. Share observations, facts, and comments with nursing staff and members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure efficient coordination of overall healthcare plans.
5. Provide guidance and direction to assigned staff members involved in patient care.
6. Uphold departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality initiatives, safety measures, and infection control protocols.
a. Adhere to hospital-wide safety responsibilities :
1. Maintain a secure environment for patients, visitors, and fellow employees.
2. Acquire and maintain knowledge of all hospital safety policies and procedures, including fire safety and disaster protocols.
3. Follow safety practices when using equipment.
4. Use appropriate safety devices on equipment, ensuring their proper functioning.
5. Wear prescribed safety clothing, glasses, gloves, footwear, etc., when required, and strictly adhere to "Universal Precautions" guidelines.
6. Promptly report any unsafe act or condition to the supervisor.
7. Participate in safety programs whenever conducted.
b. Possess familiarity with and adhere to the department's "Policy and Procedure" manual.
c. Assist the Clinical Coordinator with quality initiative indicators, as necessary.
7. Assist in the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and supplies.
8. Attend meetings as mandated and participate on committees as directed.
9. Transport patients to and from the Physical Therapy Department when required.
10. Assume the responsibilities and duties of Senior Therapists during their absences.
11. Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature reviews, in-service meetings, workshops, and more.
12. Comply with annual mandatory educational program requirements of the position.
13. Provide age-appropriate care to patients across various stages of life, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
14. Understand and demonstrate the importance of meeting the needs of customers / patients by interacting with them in a caring and friendly manner, addressing their psychological and physical well-being, and proactively maintaining communication to ensure a safe and positive experience.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, to practice Physical Therapy in the state of New York (NYS) at the time of hire.
EXPERIENCE :
Prior experience in a hospital setting preferred.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS :
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of employment commencement date.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
Considerable physical effort and occasional repetitive tasks involved. May include lifting, pushing, and pulling. Must possess the ability to independently lift a minimum of thirty (30) pounds and a maximum of one-hundred and fifty (150) pounds with the assistance of another individual.
EXPOSURE CATEGORY :
Category II. Tasks that do not involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. However, employment might require the performance of unscheduled Category I tasks.
INFECTION CONTROL :
Strictly adhere to universal precautions when engaging in patient care activities.
