Position Description

As part of a campus-wide hiring initiative, the Department of Film & Media at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Native American / Indigenous People's Media with an expected start date of July 1, 2025.

Candidates might be a mediamaker and / or a theorist or historian. We are seeking a scholar and / or practitioner whose work embodies or addresses emerging and / or historical Native American / Indigenous media practices broadly, including historical, theoretical, and critical making / practice approaches that center on moving image, sound, or digital media technologies.

Theoretical or historical approaches might emphasize the ethical, social, and cultural considerations of Indigenous knowledge, sovereignty, and decolonization, while media makers might engage media technological systems of meaning that are centered in Native American / Indigenous communities and expression.

Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience teaching core film / media / digital history / digital media theory or film / sound / digital production courses.

The successful candidate will join in the program's effort to build a community of scholars and students whose scholarship, pedagogy, and background move the discipline of film and media.

We are particularly interested in scholars / practitioners who work across diverse epistemologies, are theoretically and methodologically innovative, and are politically and socially engaged.

The Department of Film and Media at the University of California, Berkeley is one of the oldest film programs in the United States with a growing interest in a wide range of media practices, industries, and cultures.

The Department holds a strong intellectual commitment to innovative interdisciplinary approaches to film and media research, evidenced in the scholarship of its eleven current ladder faculty, five of whom have officially shared appointments with other departments in the Division of Arts & Humanities.

The department offers both a BA with approximately 300 current majors and a PhD in Film and Media with between 20-25 graduate students enrolled at any one time.

It is currently one of the fastest-growing undergraduate majors in the Division of Arts & Humanities with a focus on film and media scholarship, criticism, and production.

The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
