Situated on the Allegheny Plateau in Pennsylvania, the Allegheny National Forest is a smaller but very active forest managed by the US Forest Service.

This internship will provide the candidate with a working and learning experience in the field of civil engineering, primarily in forest transportation systems and facilities / structures.

As engineering touches all resource areas in the Forest Service, this position will have many opportunities to work with other staff on Forest such as Recreation, Environmental Planning, Timber and Silviculture.

This position requires a detailed oriented and self-motivated individual who is eager to learn the different aspects and resources of the Forest Service.

Project work will include work on a variety of facilities such as buildings, dams and bridges, as well as roads and trails.

Projects will include some design work as well as project inspection, with some time devoted to material research. Time will be spent in the field and on specific project locations, as well as in the office.

Working in Engineering will create a holistic forest experience and will leave the intern with broad knowledge, skills and abilities that will make them highly successful in any future employment endeavor.

Duties :

All the below duties are performed with the guidance of an experienced Civil Engineer or Civil Engineering Technician.

  • Conduct traverse surveys and field measurements sometimes in rough, uneven terrain;
  • Collect data for road and facility construction, maintenance, and monitoring;
  • Make design calculations and prepare specifications for portions of projects for roads, trails, water and wastewater facilities, buildings, bridges, culverts and other engineering facilities;
  • Prepare maps and drawings;
  • Assist with construction inspections for adherence to approved plans and specifications;
  • Enter and manage data in Forest Service databases;

Support and learn about other Forest Service programs, such as recreation, timber, environmental planning, and survey.

Qualifications :

  • Compiling, managing and reporting multi-faceted data;
  • Ability to read maps, collect GPS data and develop GIS products for engineering projects;
  • Ability to collect, compute, develop and produce basic analytical reports of engineering data;
  • CADD / AutoCADD application development and products in support of an engineering project;
  • Mathematics and engineering degree candidates are preferred;
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Benefits : $750 / week

$750 / week

$1,000 / month Housing Stipend

Allowance available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with role and goals

Direct Hire Authority Eligibility after completing minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions.

Option for health insurance coverage during full-term

This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent contractors are required to pay all self-employment taxes (Social Security & Medicare) as well as income tax.
