Department Summary
The Institute for Translational Research is devoted to bringing novel diagnostics and interventions to patients and families suffering from neurodegenerative diseases, fostering translational research in neurodegenerative diseases at UNTHSC, and Create solutions for a healthier community.
Our team spans basic "bench-top" science, clinical research, community-based research and clinical trials. Our translational approach is intended to foster discovery and expedite those discoveries toward the benefit of those suffering from brain disease.
A particular emphasis of ITR is the development of personalized (or person-focused) medicine for Alzheimer's disease.
Position Overview
Research of the lab focuses on the application of neuroimaging methods in neurodegenerative disease in diverse populations.
The successful candidate will have the ability to develop and implement innovative computer algorithms for processing and analyzing data and will assume major responsibility for software and hardware development and implementation.
Imaging data consists of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET).
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline.
- Academic research experience and familiarity with neuroimaging.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong facility with statistical analyses.
- Familiarity and competence with standard computer programming languages / environments (e.g., MATLAB,
UNIX, Python, C / C++, csh, bash), statistical packages (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS), and neuroimaging software packages (e.g.,
FSL, SPM, FreeSurfer, and 3D Slicer).
Willingness and ability to create programs (neuroimaging processing and analytics) useful for researchers with varying
levels of computer skills.
Demonstrated technical ability including effective skills in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in relevant discipline.
- Excellent communication skills and adept at interacting with individuals from a wide range of research backgrounds.
- Experience in training, mentoring, and overseeing other lab members

Job Duties :
- Retrieve data from intranet repositories, organize data for initial pre-processing and analysis, perform pre-processing, quality control and analyses and communicate results with researchers in the laboratory.
- Develop and apply advanced statistical and analytical approaches to neuroimaging for the purpose of analyzing neuroimaging data.
- Design, develop and implement computer algorithms and software for processing and a analyzing structural and functional MRI and PET imaging data of the brain and maintain data analysis programs developed over time.
- Evaluate and resolve software problems for both existing and developing analysis streams for the purpose of processing and analyzing neuroimaging data.
- Adherence to best practices in version control and software documentation for newly developed and existing software.
