Key Responsibilities
- Speak with incoming and current formerly incarcerated students to help guide them in college readiness and overcoming obstacles to a successful educational experience
- Facilitate connecting Project Rebound students to needed SJSU and community resources
- Provide support and information to prospective students who are in custody to help them, upon release, take steps to succeed as SJSU students
- Speak at community presentations (including presentations to those in custody) and community events regarding the SJSU Project Rebound program
- Attend community events to explain the availability of educational assistance to formerly incarcerated people
- Inform Program Director regarding local resources that formerly incarcerated students may need (e.g., emergency housing, food, public assistance, transportation, medical care) and introduce the Program Director to local agency personnel
- Help train Project Rebound volunteers regarding working with justice-involved people
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of issues affecting justice-involved individuals, including low-income communities and / or communities of color
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and comfort in public speaking to diverse audiences
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, community members, and others involved in facilitating the success of formerly incarcerated students
- High level of professionalism and attention to detail required
- Ability to maintain confidential, sensitive information
- Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, and Gmail)
- Knowledge of database management and reporting
- A Valid California Driver’s License and a good DMV record
- Ability to speak Spanish or Vietnamese
- Ability to gain clearance to jails and prisons
- Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
- Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters
Required Qualifications
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field.
Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.
Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master’s degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree
- Experience with a college environment
- Minimum 2 years of experience assisting people who are formerly incarcerated
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a diverse, multi-cultural setting
- Experience in custody
- Knowledge of resources available to meet needs of current and incoming SJSU students who are formerly incarcerated
- Experience speaking to diverse groups
- Experience working with students
- Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese
Compensation
Classification : Student Services Professional II
Anticipated Hiring Range : $2,421 / month - $2,451 / month (0.5 FTE)
CSU Salary Range : $4,841 / month - $6,884 / month
