Department Information
Within this setting, the college has several research focus areas, including an area focused on Infrastructure, Sustainable Communities, Digital Construction, and Clean Water, in which the CEC department will play a critical role.
In addition, the department is critical to developing talented future Georgia construction leaders in state's booming construction industry.
The Civil Engineering & Construction (CEC) department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Civil Engineering (BSCE), Construction Engineering (BSConE), and Construction (BSCons).
The BSCE and BSConE programs are accredited by ABET, and the BSCons program is accredited by ACCE. The curriculum for each program emphasizes hands-on and experiential learning, where students develop practical skills that employers value.
State-of-the-art equipment / instrumentation and advanced software are employed in both classroom and laboratory / field settings to prepare students to be productive technical professionals when they graduate.
The department offers graduate degrees, including a Master of Science in Civil Engineering and, starting Fall 2024, a college-wide PhD in Engineering.
Disciplines emphasized in the Ph.D. program relevant to the CEC department include areas such as environmental engineering, structural dynamics, advanced engineering economy, and advanced quality control.
The CEC department chair will be integral to the process of establishing and growing both the undergraduate and graduate programs and research agenda to their full potential, as well as engaging alumni, industry, and federal / state organizations.
The department needs a leader who can guide new faculty in research and help build a state-wide leader in construction-related education.
Job Summary
Reporting to the dean, the chair will provide leadership for the teaching, scholarship, and service missions of the department on the Statesboro campus.
The chair will advance a culture of academic excellence where distinction in teaching, research, and service is expected and rewarded.
The chair will provide leadership for undergraduate and graduate curriculum development, assessment of student learning, accreditation, research programs, and initiatives that further the department and College strategic plans.
The chair will also be responsible for departmental resource management, such as budgeting, purchasing, and academic scheduling.
The chair will represent the department within the University community as well as maintain contacts with industry, alumni, and external stakeholders.
The chair will be an active teacher-scholar in the department and participate in service. The position is a 12-month appointment and requires a terminal degree.
Required Qualifications
Earned terminal degree in civil engineering, construction engineering, construction / construction management, or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in any of these areas
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives
Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development
Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research / creative activities as appropriate to the discipline
Proven and strong record of leading teams of faculty and staff to accomplish objectives.
Proven and strong record of collaboration both within a college and across the university.
Minimum of 5 years of full-time college / university teaching experience at the assistant professor level is required for the rank of associate professor, along with a strong record of research and service with publications and presentations in professional venues
Minimum of 5 years of full-time college / university teaching experience at the associate professor level is required for the rank of professor, along with a strong record of research and service with substantial publications and presentations in professional venues.
Preferred Qualifications
Record of professional experience and research and service commensurate with the rank of Professor
Demonstrated strong leadership ability
Professional engineering license or the ability to become licensed
Teaching or research expertise in one or more of the following areas : environmental engineering; structural engineering, transportation engineering, construction engineering, sustainable engineering, and / or construction management
Experience relevant to recruiting, developing, and retaining high-achieving faculty
Experience with managing a department or program, including budgeting
History of an open administrative style, showing flexibility in governance and demonstrating the ability to earn the trust and confidence of faculty, students, staff, and administrators
Experience with developing partnerships with business and industry leaders in the public and private sectors, including fundraising
Experience with strategic planning and program development
Established record of competitive scholarship and the acquisition and management of extramural funding
Experience with ABET, ACCE and / or university-wide accreditation
Proposed Salary
Commensurate with experience.
This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
