The Surgical Acute Care unit is a medical surgical unit with a focus on postoperative care. Scope of service includes continuous cardiac monitoring, continuous oxygen saturations, wound, and drain management.

Patients are admitted following surgical procedures via intra-hospital transfer from IMC, ICU, PACU, and as direct admissions through Express Care / Critical Care Resuscitation Unit (CCRU).

We coordinate independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective participative member of multidisciplinary patient care service team.

Nurse Patient Ratio : 4 : 1-5 : 1

Patient population :

The Surgical Acute Care unit serves as the primary postoperative designation for the following specialty surgical services, including but not limiting to Surgical Oncology, Gynecology Neoplasia, Urology, Acute Care Emergency Surgery, Otolaryngology, Oral Maxillary Facial surgeries, Plastic surgeries and General Surgery which includes the bariatric surgery patients.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required.
• Current CPR certification required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
• Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information.
• Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.

Patient Safety

• Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
• Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
• Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
• Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
