Job Description

Nevada State University invites applications for a Student Worker - Workforce Development - Scorpion STEAM Academy Camp Mentor.

The student worker will provide daily support to summer youth programming within Workforce Development.

Scorpion STEAM Academy (SSA) at Nevada State University supports the development and growth of its diverse community of young STEAM learners through innovative, engaging experiences that promote the acquisition of interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to enhance student's personal, academic, and professional career success while meeting the needs of tomorrow's workforce.

SSA promotes an increased interest in science, technology, engineering, and math, including their applications in art and music, through targeted classroom-based learning reinforced by hands-on projects and educational field trips to facilities of industry partners.

Summer 2024 camps will take place from Monday-Friday between June and July. The incumbent can expect to work between 4-8 hours a day.

SSA day camps will run the following weeks :

Week 1 : June 3rd through June 7th.

Week 2 : June 10th through June 14th.

Week 3 : June 17th through June 21st.

Week 4 : June 24th through June 28th.

No camps the week of July 1st through July 5th.

Week 5 : July 8th through July 12th.

Week 6 : July 15th through July 19th.

Week 7 : July 22nd through July 26th.

Continued employment into the academic year is not guaranteed as the SSA is a limited-term program.

Core Responsibilities :

SSA Camp Mentor will perform diverse duties requiring a degree of responsibility and independent judgement. The incumbent, with supervision from the Director and Program Specialist, will be expected to :

  • Maintain and demonstrate a working knowledge of SSA procedures and policies plus relevant University regulations to perform duties requiring a degree of responsibility and judgement with little supervision.
  • Facilitate implementation of camp activities by taking initiative with little to no training.
  • Participate in all camp activities including, but not limited to, classroom lessons, site visits, presentations. Provide mentorship to camp participants during camp hours.
  • Promote high educational outcome expectations for students by fostering an inclusive environment and through effective classroom management.
  • Serve as a student lead, on a rotating basis, during off-campus camp activities (e.g., field trips); incumbent will coordinate other student workers and supervise camp participants.
  • Oversee assigned administrative activities, including but not limited to, drop-off and pick-up procedures, classroom preparation, inventory and ordering.
  • Collect detailed program-specific data and report analysis in a concise summary.
  • Offer instructional support by assisting with delivery of specialized technical programming and / or leading camp workshops in a structured environment.
  • Provide advanced and outstanding customer service through excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Perform other duties, requiring an exceptional diversified skillset, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Must be enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 at Nevada State.
  • Commitment to work 20-40 hours per week, Monday-Friday from June 1 to July 31.
  • Strong communication (written and oral), interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Employment is contingent upon a successful criminal background check.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience working with youth, including demonstrated sensitivity to diverse minority populations.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and / or another language.
  • Eligible for federal work-study financial aid program.
  • Certified in CPR / AED and First Aid (training will be provided to all employees).

Work Hours :

Student employees can work up to 19.5 hours per week.

June-July : Student workers may be able to work Monday-Friday, 20-40 hours per week between 7 : 00 AM to 6 : 00 PM, if approved by the campus Executive of the department and so as long as student employees are not enrolled in any classes during the summer term.

There is mandatory training on May 28-29, 2024 for all SSA student workers.

Hourly Rate : $13.25 per hour.
