Job Summary :

Responsible for the accurate gross description, dissection and processing of biopsies, margins and tissue specimens according to established protocols. Help Histology department performing H and E stain, special Stains and / or Immunohistochemistry Stains.

Essential Key Responsibilities :

• Performs all technical aspects of grossing and dictating tissue specimens using a variety of laboratory materials and equipment under direct supervisor of Pathologist or Lab Supervisor.
• Ensures specimen integrity upon arrival and throughout the entire process.
• Dictates a gross description for each specimen including, but not limited to anatomical site, size, color, weight, dimensions, count, volume, cut techniques, abnormal findings, dissects and prepares tissue for cassettes.  Escalates non-routine complicated specimens to the Pathologist.
• Maintains accurate work records.
• Prepares dissected tissue specimens and place them into cassettes.
• Loads prepared cassettes into Tissue Processors and starts processor.
• Help and Performs H & E stains, including special and immunohistochemistry stains, as requested by a Pathologist or Supervisor. Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance Procedures.
• May label requisitions, specimen containers, and cassettes.
• Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed.
• Files, retrieves, and distributes blocks, slides, and pathology reports.
• Operates, cleans, and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments and workstation.
• Disposes of hazardous chemical wastes by regulatory guidelines.
• Maintains strictest confidentiality.
• Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.
• Adherence to CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education / Licensure / Certification :

BS Degree the field of Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory technology obtained from an accredited institution or equivalent under the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines of high complexity testing.   OR

Education / training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. State licensure, if applicable

1 year of practical laboratory experience preferred :

High information access is detailed and sensitive to an individuals demographics, service information, and personal medical history (past / present medical conditions, specifics of medical diagnosis or tests, treatment plans, and family history).
