The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.

Position Summary

The Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures (LAIC) at Columbia University in the City of New York fosters a deep understanding of the multiple languages, histories, and cultures of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.

Pedagogical rigor and innovative research sustain our intellectual mission and define every level of our curriculum. Founded in 1934 at Columbia, Revista Hispanica Moderna is one of the most distinguished peer-reviewed journals committed to the dissemination of outstanding scholarship on the full spectrum of Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian cultural production in Europe, Latin America, and the United States, and in all historical periods, from the Middle Ages to the present.

The Managing Editor will report to the Director of Academic Administration and Finance. The incumbent will work for the Hispanic Institute and its Revista Hispanica Moderna.

The Managing Editor will direct all phases of the editorial, production, business, and distribution for Revista Hispanica Moderna.

In addition, the incumbent will also organize, advertise, and host the activities and events of a cultural center founded in 1920 at Columbia University and housed at Casa Hispanica.

Responsibilities

Coordinate all aspects of the peer review, editing, and production of a scholarly publication

  • Initiate and oversee the double-blind peer review process and the selection of article manuscripts and book reviews for publication in Revista Hispanica Moderna .
  • Consult with the RHM Editorial Board to set the journal's editorial policy and to develop the overall focus and theme of each issue of the journal.
  • Edit and proofread academic prose in English and in Spanish with expert command of MLA Style.
  • Assemble and coordinate the submission of each issue to the publisher, Penn Press, to ensure high quality and timeliness of the final printed product.
  • Work in close partnership with the faculty members of the RHM Editorial Board and the publisher to develop and implement publicity campaigns to increase journal subscriptions.
  • Communicate in English and in Spanish with authors, referees, and book reviewers.
  • Negotiate with the journal publisher regarding contractual details including all production, administrative, subscription fulfillment, and marketing processes.
  • Manage and delegate to editorial assistants, graduate student interns, and Federal Work-Study employees, and perform all other daily editorial office functions.
  • Provide pre-professional training to graduate students serving as editorial interns.
  • Attend academic conferences and build relationships with professional associations such as the Council of Editors of Learned Journals or Publishers Without Borders.
  • Compile data and prepare statistical information for annual reports.
  • Maintain databases of referees, book reviewers, submissions, and published authors.

Assist the Director of the Hispanic Institute with its operations

  • Work closely with the H.I. Director to develop activities and events, such as lectures, colloquia, book clubs, or film screenings related to the cultures and civilizations of Spanish and Portuguese- speaking countries, as well as the US Hispanic, Portuguese, and Catalan diaspora.
  • In collaboration with the Financial Assistant and DAAF, manage the administrative budget of the Hispanic Institute, which includes the operational budget for the Revista Hispanica Moderna .
  • Identify co-sponsorship opportunities and develop proposals to secure additional financial support for the cultural activities of the Hispanic Institute.
  • Issue official invitations to Hispanic Institute and LAIC guest speakers.
  • Attend evening events at Casa Hispanica as the official representative of the Hispanic Institute.
  • Maintain a mailing list for announcements and update the Hispanic Institute's website.
  • Pursue collaborations between the Hispanic Institute and other cultural organizations, institutes, and departments at Columbia University and throughout New York.

Assist with literary and scholarly publication initiatives at Casa Hispanica

  • Provide editorial support to Sundial House : Latin American and Iberian Literature in Translation, a collaboration between the Columbia University Press and the Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures (LAIC).
  • Provide editorial mentorship to the student editors of Portales : The LAIC Undergraduate Journal .
  • Perform related duties & responsibilities as assigned / requested.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and / or equivalent related experience required.

3 - 5 years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

MA degree or equivalent and at least 5 years of editorial experience required. Applicant must be fully bilingual in English and Spanish and be capable of editing academic prose in both languages.

Expert knowledge of MLA Style required.

Experience working in academic publishing is highly desirable and some experience with event planning is preferred.
