This is a part-time, temporary position with no benefits. Work is not contracted and is instead governed by a Memorandum of Understanding.
Norfolk Public Schools pays the following hourly rates to all substitute teacher and teacher assistants, as approved by the School Board :
- Daily Substitute Teacher Assistant - $13.50
- Long-Term Substitute Teacher Assistant (With or Without Four-Year Degree) - $17.50
- Daily Substitute Teacher - $23.00
- Long-Term Substitute Teacher Without Four-Year Degree - $26.00
- Long-Term Substitute Teacher With Four-Year Degree - $33.50
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum Requirement : High School Graduation or GED. Successful completion of at least 60 hours of college course work is strongly preferred.
- No teaching license is required, but preference is given to those eligible for or in possession of a teacher license from the Virginia Department of Education.
- Must ensure a minimum of two (2) acceptable professional references are submitted electronically to the Department of Human Resources.
- Must submit to a background investigation, to include fingerprinting and child abuse records check, and the results must be satisfactory for employment as determined by the Department of Human Resources.
- Must provide documentation of ability to work in the United States; and
- Must provide documentation of a valid, negative tuberculosis screening based upon the National Department of Public Health guidelines.
Nature of Substitute Teacher Position
- Reports to the main office upon arrival.
- Reviews with the principal or designated staff member all lesson plans and schedules to be followed during the work day.
- Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which he or she is assigned.
- Teaches the lesson plan as prepared by the absent teacher. Long-term substitute teachers may be responsible for preparing lesson plans.
- Assumes responsibility for overseeing pupil behavior in class and during lunch and / or activity periods.
- Reports, in writing, on the day’s activities at the conclusion of the teaching day.
- Follows all policies, rules, and procedures to which full-time teachers are subject and which govern best teaching practices.
- An above-average amount of walking, standing, and bending is required.
- Work involves exposure to normal, everyday risks.
- Work is performed in a classroom and involves no unusual demands.
- The substitute teacher is responsible for standard classroom teacher duties in the absence of the full-time teacher.
Nature of Substitute Teacher Assistant Position
- Reports to the main office upon arrival.
- Works under the supervision of the classroom teacher and administrative personnel.
- Assists teacher in the daily management and instruction of students.
- Performs a variety of tasks in order to help facilitate the daily classroom instruction and activities.
- Closely monitorsthe needs of the students, to include basic personal needs, safety needs, physical help, observation, and reporting of student behavior.
- Follows all policies, rules, and procedures to which full-time teacher assistants are subject and which govern best teaching practices.
- An above-average amount of walking, standing, and bending is required.
- Work involves exposure to normal, everyday risks.
- Work is performed in a classroom and involves no unusual demands.
