JOB SUMMARY :
Registered Nurse RNFA Operating Room!!
The Operating Room RNFA is responsible for a variety of tasks that lead to a high level of customer satisfaction in the most cost-effective manner with respect and dignity.
Under the supervision of the Director of Surgical Services and OR Manager, the Operating Room Registered Nurse First Assistant assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of both inpatients and outpatients in accordance with individual needs, physician orders, Hospital policy and standards of patient care.
The RNFA functions as a First assist under the direct supervision of a physician. Must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the position, and follow Hospital policy and standards of patient care.
Receives general instructions on all assignments and in accordance with the standards, policies, and practices of Valley Presbyterian Hospital.
These services further the mission of Valley Presbyterian Hospital, which is to provide high quality, cost effective healthcare for the people in the communities we serve.
EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS :
At least two years previous surgical nursing experience in acute care setting or completion of an OR Resident training program.
EDUCATION :
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after April 2023, with an associate degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within 30 days of employment and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date.
- Completion of the RNFA program. Possesses capabilities as determined by the Director of Surgical Services or by the OR Manager.
LICENSURES / CERTIFICATION :
- Current licensure with the California Board of Registered Nursing
- Current BLS certification
- ACLS, PALS and CNOR, RNFA certification
- Must successfully complete and maintain LA City Fire Card certification at the time of hire or within the first 30 days of employment
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Adheres to established Hospital / departmental policies and procedures, objectives, Performance Improvement Program, Infection Assessment and Improvement Program, legal, safety, environment control standards and Patient’s Bill of Rights.
- Performs thorough preoperative assessment, plans age specific nursing interventions and evaluates the care of all patients undergoing surgical procedure.
- Under the direct supervision of the physician, the RNFA assists in performing surgical procedures.
- Assesses and monitors room during surgical procedures.
- Demonstrates proper handling and documentation of specimen collection.
- Demonstrates safe use of electrosurgical units and other equipment.
- Is able to suture, assist in transcribing post op orders into patient chart.
- Identifies, assures availability, and prepares appropriate supplies and equipment based on identified surgical procedures.
- Educates patients and family members appropriately.
- Transports patients safely.
- Provides care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- Demonstrates proper technique in Personal Protective equipment.
- Demonstrates proper use of surgical equipment.
- Provides comfort and support for patients. Demonstrates sensitivity to patient's care and privacy.
- Demonstrates an understanding of organizational structure and utilizes appropriate channels of communication.
- Demonstrates a positive cooperative manner when dealing with all members of the health care team.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the approaches to and methods of Performance Improvement.
- Collaborates with licensed staff to identify own career and educational needs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
