The Dentist isresponsible for professional dental care forinmates / residents.

The successful applicantshould be able to perform ALL the following functions at a pace andlevel of performance consistent with the actual job performancerequirements.

Perform routine dental treatment including examiningteeth and gums for cavities, infections, and diseases; takingnecessary x-rays;

performing fillings, extractions,cleanings, full and partial dentures, and anterior and premolarroot canals aswarranted.

Diagnose and develop dental treatment plans forinmates / residents.

Develop, coordinate, and supervise the facility dentalprogram to include advising and instructing inmates / residents inthe cause and prevention of dentaldisease.

Recruit, schedule, train, supervise and evaluate theperformance of any subordinate staff.

Consult with other health care staff and coordinatespecialized or emergency dental care asneeded.

Control andinventory medications, syringes, dental instruments, and otherdental supplies or equipment as required by establishedprocedures.

Keep work area clean; use or direct the use ofappropriate sanitation and infection controlmethods.

Prepare and maintaindental files and a variety of standard narrative, statistical,summary and / or operational records, reports, and logs, usingappropriate grammar, to include filing, alphabetizing and labeling;

review reports and records produced by staff; properly processesall reports and documents in a timelymanner.

Maintainabsolute security and confidentiality of all dentalrecords.

Routinely audit dentalfiles for documentation of all providedservices.

Monitor the provision of any required contractservices.

Coordinate professional dental and related servicesperformed by external providers.

Screen all requests for records and approve / disapproveresponses as appropriate following policy andprocedures.

Provide input for facility dental budgetrequests.

Identify financial responsibility (inmate / resident,corporate, insurance company, etc.) for all incurredexpenses.

Complete logs of all dental billings and assist thebusiness office by reviewing all dental billings at leastmonthly.

Evaluate and recommendmethods of improving operational efficiency and cost effectivenessof dental and related services

Audit pharmacy use for adherence toformulary.

Monitor and supervise strict staff compliance with allapplicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlledsubstances.

Observe and record inmate / residentbehavior.

Maintain equipment and supplies as required; orderreplacement items in a timely manner; requisition appropriatepurchases via the purchase ordersystem.

Inspect thedental unit for items that could be used as contraband byinmates / residents; securely store supplies and equipment or providefor their safe disposal.

Monitor and evaluate physical safety requirements ofboth patients and staff to provide a safe workingenvironment.

Attend seminars, workshops, conferences, etc., asrequired.

Accept on-call status.

Monitor safety practices : prepare and disseminatesafety and accident reports as required by policy; take appropriateaction in cases of serious and unusual incidents andemergencies.

Communicate effectively and coherently toadministration, staff, inmates / residents, visitors,a nd the general public, particularly in situationsrequiring tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness andgood judgment.

This includes giving information,instructions, and directions, mediating disputes, and providingreliable testimony, in court and other formalsettings.

Review, process and respond (via corporate counsel) tolawsuits; attend court hearings, when necessary; conduct researchof charts;

review status of inmates / residents with serious healthproblems for completion of all necessary intervention andtreatment.

Read, analyze, comprehend, and interprettechnical procedures or governmental regulations, legal andnon-legal documents, including the processing of such documents asmedical instructions, commitment orders, summons and other legalwrits.

Coordinate the movement ofinmates / residents to and from different areas for dentaltreatment.

Initiate and complete investigations and inquiries withaccuracy by gathering information and evidence, interviewing, andobtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, andconfidential informers;

exercise independent judgment bydetermining when probable cause exists to recommend or takedisciplinary action.

Reliably and repetitively identifyinmates / residents by visualmeans.

Perform searches of people and objects capable ofconcealing contraband. Search buildings and outdoor areas that willinvolve detecting and identifying objects and detainingpeople.

Engage in functions in confined areas, physicallychecking the doors, windows, and other areas to verify they aresecure.

Endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted with thehostile views and opinions of inmates / residents and othersencountered in an antagonisticenvironment.

Take appropriate action to prevent ordiffuse potentially disruptivesituations.

  • Perform rescue functions at accidents,emergencies, and disasters to include administering basic emergencymedical aid, physically removing people away from dangeroussituations, and securing and evacuating people from confinedareas
  • Define problems, collect data, establishfacts, and draw valid conclusions; apply management techniques toproblems of administration and devise workablesolutions.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide using wholenumbers, common fractions and decimals; work with mathematicalconcepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and applyconcepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions topractical situations.
  • Interpret an extensive variety of technicalinstructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with severalabstract and concrete variables.
  • Endeavor tocomply with the requirements of applicable regulations, laws,rules, procedures, policies, standards and / orcontract.

Remain alert at all times and reactquickly, efficiently and calmly in emergency and other high stresssituations.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Graduate of anapproved school of dentistry and licensure as a dentist in thestate of employment.

  • At least one year of experiencepreferred. Mustdemonstrate good oral and written communicationskills.
  • A valid driver's license ispreferred, unless required by contract or applicablestatute.

Must demonstrate a knowledge ofcorrectional custody methods and techniques, pertinent facilityrules, regulations, and standards.

Minimum age requirement : Must beat least 18 years ofage.
