The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean and Executive Director, the incumbent oversees fundraising and engagement activities for Miller Theatre at Columbia University, the premier performing arts venue at Columbia University, dedicated to producing and presenting unique events in contemporary and early music, jazz, and opera.

Responsible for reaching contributed revenue goals from individual, foundation, and government supporters. The incumbent plays an important role in day-to-day decision making as well as long-term strategic planning, and works to increase support for and awareness of the arts at Columbia University as a member of Miller Theatre's collaborative and supportive fundraising and engagement team.

Other related duties as assigned. This on-site position requires evening and weekend hours for concerts and events.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee fundraising and engagement strategies and campaigns to meet or exceed Miller Theatre's revenue goals, maximize awareness, and increase contributions from individual, foundation, and government supporters.
  • Identify, cultivate, and steward a portfolio of approximately 100 donors and potential donors, through in-person meetings, phone calls, written solicitations, and other forms of targeted outreach.
  • Responsible for Miller Theatre's annual fund campaign to maintain and grow the individual donor base. Includes research, analysis, development, and implementation of campaign strategy;

defining and meeting annual fund targets; direct solicitation of individual prospects; written communications, print pieces, and mailing list management.

Interact and collaborate positively, constructively, and effectively with multiple constituencies including Miller Theatre patrons and board members, granting agency colleagues, and Columbia University stakeholders.

Foster a collegial and inclusive environment to cultivate strengths that enables everyone to do their best work.

Manage year-round calendar of grant opportunities; support the development of proposals; write reports and acknowledgements;

identify and cultivate new funding opportunities; closely track submission requirements and deadlines to ensure timely submissions.

  • Oversee donor research to inform and improve the development of new fundraising opportunities and strategic engagement plans.
  • Work closely with Miller Theatre's Board of Advisors, oversee planning and implementation for board meetings and special events.
  • Serve as a liaison with Columbia University's Office of Alumni and Development and the School of the Arts Development Office.
  • Serve as a department representative at Miller Theatre performances and fundraising events, including evening and weekend hours, to facilitate continued and increased support for Miller Theatre.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of three to five years of related experience.
  • Commitment to fundraising for the arts, an interest in Miller Theatre's programming, and the ability to articulate a compelling case for support.
  • Interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills focused on establishing and maintaining productive relationships with colleagues, peers, leadership, and other stakeholders.
  • A high level of energy, initiative, and creativity with the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of individuals and groups.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capacity to work independently and successfully within a deadline-driven, multi-tasking environment. Ability to handle multiple projects.

Strong attention to detail.

  • Computer literacy and high proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in fundraising at an arts organization or university, including demonstrated success with leadership annual fund giving.
  • Experience with development-specific databases.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of, or genuine interest in, the performing arts.
