Emergency Services Tech Specialist- PRN (As Needed)- Variable shift

Collaborates with the multidisciplinary healthcare delivery team to provide specified care to patients with a wide range of injuries and illnesses.

Anticipates patient care needs and facilitates implementation of diagnostic and treatment measures. Performs duties under the supervision of Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner or Physician.

Acts as a role model for other technicians in both the technical and behavioral aspects of the position. Develops competency in all aspects of role within 3 months.

Qualifications : Minimum Education

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED (Required)

Minimum Work Experience

2 years Direct patient care experience in an emergency setting and completion of an emergency, medical or nursing technician training program. (Required)

Required Skills / Knowledge

Comply with all Hospital / departmental policies / procedures regarding provision of patient care, competency validation and environmental safety.

Functional Accountabilities

Demonstrate Clinical Competence

  • Identify need for , obtain and document patient vital signs accurately (T , P , R, BP , pulse oximetry , weight in kilograms)
  • Recognize, document and report (to assigned RN / physician) changes in vital signs, color, breathing, behavior , consciousness level or neuro-vascular status of limb that deviate from normal for patient / age group.
  • Set up, attach and document correct placement of monitoring equipment, including alarm limits.
  • Anticipate need to assemble, set up, and place patient on correctly and document oxygen / cool mist delivery via face mask, nasal cannula, trach collar , blow-by and resuscitation equipment.
  • Apply , maintain, discontinue and document use of patient restraint devices according to Hospital policy .
  • Perform / document POCT using correct procedure independently.
  • Perform / document independently phlebotomy and IV starts on difficult patients using correct skin preparation.
  • Set up and attach IV fluid and pump using aseptic technique, documenting procedure on appropriate treatment record / flow sheet.
  • Perform and document basic and complex wound care including wound cleansing, bandaging and burn debridment / care.
  • Assist with establishing and maintain patient in full spinal immobilization (on stretcher with backboard and stiff-neck collar in place).
  • Perform orthopedic procedures independently including plaster and non-plaster splints, slings, immobilizers, and ice.
  • Assemble and fit patient crutches independently.
  • T each crutch-walking to patients independently .
  • Assist in meeting stable and unstable helicopter arrivals as assigned by charge nurse.
  • Assist Triage nurse by calling patients, explaining triage procedure, obtain / document pertinent information, vital signs, provision of basic first aid;

alert RN if patient appears ill (does not perform independent triage).

Assist with Patient Flow

  • Role model maintenance of a clean and orderly care environment.
  • Independently prepare examination room to receive patients as soon as they become empty .
  • Call patient to treatment area at direction of Charge Nurse including ID band application, obtain weight, escort to room and assist patient into appropriate gown for exam.
  • Provide / assist family with basic care needs including linen / diaper change, skin cleansing, positioning, hydration via bottle / cup, comfort measures, play activities, etc.
  • Provide safe environment for patients (e.g., side rails up, ID band in place, call system available, etc.).
  • Independently assemble equipment / supplies for anticipated examinations and procedures.
  • Independently assist care team members with examinations and procedures (does not include medication preparation / administration).
  • Transport patients on unit and to other Hospital departments, as assigned by RN, using appropriate vehicles and ensure that patient ID band is in place.
  • Independently document all vital signs, weights, procedures, observations accurately on appropriate treatment records / forms.
  • Prioritize routine tasks and special requests from other team members with guidance from assigned RN in order to accomplish timely completion of all tasks.

Promote Positive Communication

  • Document all vital signs, weights, procedures, teaching, observations accurately on appropriate treatment forms.
  • Maintain therapeutic care environment by using tactful, diplomatic communication with patients, families, visitors, care team members and other Hospital personnel.
  • Use problems-solving skills and assistance from other care team members as necessary when confronted with unfamiliar situations or problems.
  • Obtain equipment supplies and required services from other departments with appropriate method, tact and diplomacy.

Provide Comforting Approach to Patients & Families

  • Address patient / family in a kind, supportive, friendly manner.
  • Respond to questions and requests in a helpful manner.
  • Speak to patient and family at a level appropriate to their level of understanding.
  • Orient patient and family at the time of the visit to the geography and governing rules of the care area and Hospital.
  • Comfort anxious patient undergoing procedure by remaining with them and using distractions (talk, touch, song, etc.).
  • Communicate with / monitor assigned patients throughout the visit and report family / patient concerns and complaints to the Charge Nurse or Attending Physician.

  • Stop in the face of uncertainty and takes time to resolve the situation

  • Remain on unit during assigned tour of duty, notify charge nurse and appropriate care team members when leaving the unit for patient care related errands (e.

g., Pharmacy pick-up, assisting patient to inpatient unit, etc.) or assigned breaks.

  • Use designated staff areas for smoking; does not eat in patient care areas.
  • Leave patient care area when assigned shift is completed, replacement staff member is present, and report is given.
  • Use downtime productively during assigned tour of duty.
  • Attend mandatory in-service / educational programs to learn about new procedures, skills, products, equipment.
