The Museum Technology Supervisor works under the guidance of the Exhibitions Technical Director and is responsible for leading a team of technology specialists in updating and retrofitting technological components within interactive exhibits.

This role involves utilizing a diverse range of tools and technologies to diagnose and resolve malfunctions in exhibits, ensuring their seamless operation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, with a track record of motivating and directing creative teams.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of professional experience in developing video games, theme park attractions, special effects technology, software-to-hardware interface applications, robotics, or a combination of relevant experience and training.
  • Previous experience with network infrastructure and wireless applications.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, Java, Unity, MAX / MSP, Unreal Engine, or various versions of C / C++, with the ability to learn new languages as required.
  • Ability to rewrite code for exhibits to update hardware technology and integrate with new systems.
  • Familiarity with multiple operating systems, including current versions of MS Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.
  • Experience with CAD software for mechanical design (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Strong knowledge of actuators, control systems, and sensors, including capacitive, ultrasonic, and photovoltaic.
  • Hands-on experience in rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing, machining, laser-cutting, and CNC lathe.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of museum staff.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work at high elevations utilizing lifts and fall safety equipment.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication.
  • Flexibility to work a schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel to other venues for exhibit installations.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of Museum Technology Specialists in diagnosing, documenting, updating, and retrofitting technological components within interactive exhibits.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to team members, fostering a positive, collaborative, and innovative work environment, prioritizing collective workflow goals to ensure efficient use of resources and timely completion of deliverables.
  • Collaborate with the Exhibitions Technical Director to develop and implement strategies for maintaining exhibit functionality and develop preventative maintenance schedules to ensure the ongoing performance and reliability of interactive exhibits, adopting strategies for long-term sustainability and scalability.
  • Oversee the design development, installation, testing, and evaluation of exhibit technologies to ensure functionality, usability, and strong visitor engagement.
  • Diagnose and resolve malfunctions in exhibits using a variety of tools and technologies.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure seamless integration of technological components with exhibit designs while enhancing interactivity and maximizing visitor experience.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Exhibit Development to evaluate needs for updating or modifying exhibits in the future, utilizing principles of iterative design and continuous improvement processes.
  • Develop and maintain documentation related to exhibit technology, including but not limited to : code repositories, technical specifications, and maintenance procedures.
  • Train museum staff on the operation and maintenance of exhibit technology as needed.
  • Stay current with advancements in technology relevant to museum exhibits and recommend updates or improvements as appropriate.
  • Oversee exhibit installations at other venues as required, ensuring that technology components are properly integrated and functioning.
  • Provide regular reports to the Exhibitions Technical Director on the status of exhibit technology projects and any issues encountered.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, applying your versatile skillset to meet the evolving needs of the museum.

Compensation

$67,000 - $70,000 per year
