Salary range : An estimated range for this position is $1,875 to $4,500 per course.

Anticipated start : As early as August 2024 for Fall 2024, January 2025 for Spring 2025, and May 2025 for Summer 2025

Position duration : Fall 2024 and / or Spring 2025 and / or Summer 2025 terms

Position description

UC Merced Extension Education Programs invites applications for part-time instructors for the Teacher Preparation Program (TPP).

Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed for the academic year (2024 / 2025) and summer term.

These are by-agreement contract positions for the semester of appointment. Reappointment, if any, is based solely on instructional need.

Candidates should be competent in conducting instruction independently, without supervision, and working collaboratively with the greater Extension and Education Program teams.

All instructors are required to attend an instructor orientation and training, as well as monthly instructor meetings.

Teacher Preparation Program courses are face-to-face and online, typically held from 4 : 30-6 : 50 pm and 7 : 10-9 : 30 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and / or Thursday evenings.

The summer hours of instruction may differ.

Positions are typically filled in the spring and summer terms for summer and fall courses and during the fall for spring courses, but openings may occur throughout the year and can be filled as needed from applications in the pool.

Qualified applicants will be identified from the pool when needs arise; you are encouraged to apply immediately to ensure consideration.

Compensation may vary based on enrollment (high or low) and experience.

Instructors will serve on a rotational program admission interview panel for future teacher credential candidates.

Student-teacher candidates are given a course evaluation each term. This initiates the TPP administrators' assessment of the course and program effectiveness.

The TPP administration will share course evaluation feedback with the instructor and UC Mentors. Professional Development opportunities may be suggested and / or required for continuous program improvement.

As part of the University's efforts to prevent and respond to sexual violence and sexual harassment, each instructor and UC Mentor will be assigned a training course required of staff at all UC locations.

This course meets the requirements of 2 CCR 11024, California Government Code 12950.1, AB 1825 / 2053, 34 CFR 668.46 Violence Against Women Act, and UC Policies on Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment, Abusive Conduct, and Anti-Discrimination.

It will take a minimum of 1 hour to complete.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

  • A minimum of five years experience teaching (TK-16)
  • Teaching experience in the appropriate content area
  • A Master's Degree in related field.
  • Valid TK-12 California clear credential and English Learner authorization or CLAD. A terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D.

J.D.) may be substituted in replacement of a Valid TK-12 California clear credential.

  • Knowledgeable in the California content standards (Teacher Preparation Courses)
  • Knowledgeable in the Teaching Performance Expectations (Teacher Preparation Courses)
  • Knowledgeable in current educational theory and practice (Teacher Preparation Courses)
  • Knowledgeable in support strategies for English learners and students with learning needs and demonstrates these effective strategies within their own classroom
  • Online instructional experience, knowledge of learning management systems, and Zoom

Additional qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education (or related field) and a valid California Clear Credential
  • Coursework or other scholarly preparation relevant to the course assigned
  • Teaching experience in K-12 public schools

Preferred qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in teaching, leadership, or other clinical practice in K-12 settings
  • Original research in the appropriate content area
  • Experience as an Academic Coach or Teacher on Special Assignment in the appropriate content area
  • Pedagogical expertise, strong content knowledge, and positive communication skills
  • Experience with adult learners
  • Appreciation and understanding of the cultural and linguistic diversity of students and the San Joaquin Valley community
  • Able to serve as a resource to candidates in developing a philosophy of education that promotes development of equitable and inclusive learning environments
