The Medical College of Wisconsin is an academic partner Children's Wisconsin, the region's only independent healthcare system dedicated solely to the health and well-being of children.

This free-standing 306-bed children's hospital ranks as one of the top children's hospitals in the United States.

The Department of Pediatrics - Division of Child Advocacy and Protection Services is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to support the Child Advocacy and Protection Services Program in a variety of clinical settings, working closely with an attending physician to care for pediatric patients in a hospital-based Child Advocacy Program at Fox Valley Hospital- Children's Wisconsin and outpatient Child Advocacy Centers Green Bay and Appleton, WI.

We are continuing to grow our provider base due to strong support from Children's Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin - The Child Advocacy and Protection Services (CAPS) program is the only recognized Center of Excellence in child maltreatment in Wisconsin, and has grown to become one of the largest, leading academic child abuse programs in the nation.

The culturally competent clinical services are extensive and include a very active hospital-based program as well as multiple outpatient child advocacy centers staffed by a cohesive team of physicians, advanced practice providers, social workers, and other staff.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

The Ideal Candidate will be an experienced Pediatric APP / Clinician who is confident, an excellent communication, a team player, has strong critical-thinking skills with attention to detail who wants to be part of a thriving and very collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW).

Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to providing direct patient care to patients of the Child Advocacy and Protection services within a variety of hospital and community-based patient care settings.

In this role you will :

  • Performs consultations as a part of the hospital-based CAP program as deemed competent by the faculty physician team.
  • Conducts medical evaluations at CAPS program outpatient clinics for suspected child maltreatment (sexual and physical abuse and neglect) victims and children entering the foster care system, and bills appropriately for services provided.
  • Effectively communicates results and collaborates with community multi-disciplinary team members in the response to cases of suspected child maltreatment.
  • Provides education (formal and informal) to community members, parents, and health care learners and professionals.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participates in section research, education, and community activities.
  • Testifies in court and other legal proceedings when appropriate.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans
  • Monitor effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educate patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Perform procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborate and / or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Position Requirements :

Preferred Experience :

Two years of nursing or physician assistant experience in direct patient care for children, with proven ability to communicate well with children, parents, and physicians under frequently stressful circumstances.

Preferred areas of previous experience are the emergency department, critical care, hospital medicine, and urgent care.

Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and attentiveness to detail required. Ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and logically both verbally and in writing.

Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences clearly and concisely that is sensitive to cultural considerations and health literacy.

Interpersonal skills, which frequently involve collaborating with bedside nurses, peers and supervisors, physicians, and administrators on policy and procedural issues.

Life-long learner and skills in self-care are highly preferred.

Minimum Education :

Advanced Practice Nurse : Master's Degree or higher in Nursing

Physician Assistant : Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies
