The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. With a 130-year history, Virginia’s only dental school provides opportunities for selected, qualified individuals to study dentistry and oral health through a doctor of dental surgery (D.
D.S) program, graduate specialty training programs and a dental hygiene program. The VCU School of Dentistry is one of a small number of dental schools in the country affiliated with an academic medical center, the only dental school in the Commonwealth, and the second oldest dental school in the U.
S. It is one of five health sciences academic programs on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU. The primary mission of the School of Dentistry is to educate practitioners of Dentistry capable of meeting the general oral health needs of the communities they serve.
Integral parts of the mission are research and other scholarly activity, patient care, and leadership in dental education and organized dentistry, and collaboration and participation with other units with VCU and VCU Health Systems.
Chief Purpose of this position :
The School of Dentistry’s Department of General Dentistry is seeking applicants for an adjunct faculty position in the Department of General Dentistry to provide teaching, , and patient care.
This faculty position will provide didactic and clinical teaching and mentoring to pre-doctoral students and residents. The position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to : teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate dental students in preparation for private practice, service, and scholarship.
Methods of teaching will include clinical and didactic teaching, , curriculum development, mentoring and patient care.
Position Responsibilities :
Teaching :
Responsibilities include clinical and didactic teaching of 75-100 pre-doctoral students and 4-5 general practice post-doctoral residents, in the areas of practice management and running highly productive practices.
Faculty members are expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system that includes baccalaureate, graduate, and professional education.
Teaching across traditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required. Faculty members are expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, scholarship, and creative expression.
Clinical :
This position will provide a teaching and leadership role in the dentistry clinics, seeing patients, working with students, and working collaboratively with other faculty and staff to promote best business practices, and increase clinic productivity.
Required Qualifications :
- DDS or DMD Degree
- Eligible for a dental license in Virginia
- Strong leadership skills
- Expansive dental clinic experience
- Expertise in dental practice management
- Ability to teach practice management through clinical and didactic experiences to pre-doctoral students and general practice post-doctoral residents
- Must have the desire to mentor future dental practitioners
- Demonstrate the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology
- Demonstrate the ability to contribute to, and participate in, a humanistic environment of learning
- Demonstrate the ability, or acquire and develop such ability, to incorporate adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking
- Demonstrate experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
