- Research Assistant Classification : Full time; Hourly; Non-Exempt Salary Range : $18.29 to $22.50 based on qualifications and experience Reports to : Principal Investigator Job Summary : Under general direction, assists the Principal Investigator or other research investigators by performing moderately complex research following established protocols. This position assists with research projects, some technical in nature of and relating to molecular and cellular biology techniques. Candidate also performs various clerical and editorial duties including compiling, processing and analysis of data. Also maintains the laboratory facility, equipment and supplies, assuring it remains at ALL times a safe, clean, efficient workspace, further assuring all necessary supplies are properly stocked through the purchasing process.
Specific responsibilities may include the following :
Compiles processes and analyzes data; records research procedures and results; files and maintains records; codes data for input for electronic data processing; inputs and retrieves data using computers.Performs various clerical duties including typing, answering phones, and helping to complete applications and forms.Assists with Research Projects as instructed by Principal Investigator.Technical aspects include techniques involving culturing and storing (freezing) mycobacteria, cell culture techniques, and in vitro infection of host immune cells with M. tuberculosis, non-tuberculous mycobacteria, and possibly coronaviruses. Other techniques include RT-PCR, Western blotting, autophagy assays, apoptosis assays, and phagosome-lysosome fusion assays.Performs various editorial duties; writes, reviews and edits various materials for publications and grant applications.Maintain the laboratory facility, equipment and supplies.Help keep the laboratory safe, clean, efficient, and stocked with necessary supplies through purchasing.Maintain and control laboratory records.Maintains complete and accurate records of all test results.Prepares reports of data collected and tests performed.Results of findings are prepared with assistance from the researcher.Prepares regulatory documents for IRB, IBC, IACUC, sponsor and / or other applicable parties.Fosters an inclusive workplace where diversity and individual differences are valued and leveraged to achieve the visions and mission of the institution.Demonstrate compliance with all state, federal and all other regulatory agency requirements.Pick up and deliver materials and supplies.Performs other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications :
Undergraduate degree in microbiology, cellular biology, and / or molecular biology or related field.Minimum of 2 years prior clinical research experience with increasing responsibility.Prior research experience will be viewed favorably, particularly in cell culture and microbiological techniques, and Western blotting.Strong communication skills.Strong organizational skills.Preferred Qualifications :
Strong clinical knowledge highly desired. Experience working with Veterans.Physical Demands :
