Day (United States of America)The Senior Major Gifts Officer collaborates with Philanthropy colleagues as well as Clinical and Executive leadership to ensure the fundraising success of an individual hospital that is a part of Beth Israel Lahey Health and its affiliate institutions.

The SMGO manages a robust prospect portfolio (cultivates, solicits and stewards donors and prospective donors) in order to meet articulated annual and capital fundraising goals.

Must be a strategic thinker, collaborative colleague and possess strong relationship-building, written and oral communication skills, and a passion for community health care.

Must also be able to articulate the value of community hospitals in a large, multi-institutional health care organization.

Job Description :

Essential Responsibilities :

  • Develops and manages a personal portfolio of gift prospects and donors; works in consultation with the senior philanthropy leadership, medical and nursing staff, and key administration and volunteer leaders to conceptualize and implement engagement and solicitation strategies.
  • Creates and manages strategies for all major donors and for the inclusion or exclusion of prospects and donors from annual appeal or pledge reminder mailings.

Takes personal responsibility for the solicitation and acquisition of an annual gift from every individual in the assigned portfolio of donors and prospective donors.

  • Cultivates, solicits, and closes gifts from individual donors through direct personal visits.
  • Participates and may occasionally help lead a clinical 'beat' or special fund-raising effort that includes establishing relationships with key physicians and other clinician to advance the Grateful Patient Program.
  • Stewards a select number of planned giving donors as well as encourages them to consider additional gifts.
  • Assists the Philanthropy team in advancing organizational and system-wide goals that includes, but is not limited to, annual fund-raising events and helping to build a strong corp of volunteer leaders.
  • Has the authority to direct and support employees daily work activities. Has authority to undertake or recommend the following employment actions : hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews.

Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 5-8 years related work experience required in Minimum of five years of experience soliciting annual or major gifts and meeting quantified individual and team goals as part of a development department within a hospital or related non-profit organization.

and 0-1 years supervisory / management experience required.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with donors, volunteers, and colleagues.
  • Understanding of database management, gift processing and donor relations.
  • A solid understanding of annual fund programs and institutional development more broadly
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications.

May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.

Preferred Qualifications :

Relevant business experience considered but non-profit strongly preferred.

  • Oral Communications : Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  • Knowledge : Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
  • Team Work : Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and / or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.
  • Customer Service : Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s).
