Job Description and Duties

Will Consider Research Data Specialist I

Under the general direction of a Senior Transportation Engineer (Supervisor), the incumbent serves as the Research Specialist II (RDSII) Assistant Performance Manager (APM).

This position requires a highly skilled data specialist with the ability to collect, evaluate, clean, interpret data from complex data collection systems, and provide sound recommendations to management through the analysis.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing and maintaining new and existing data collection systems and databases for the Office of State Program (OSP).

The incumbent must possess journey level expertise with structured query language, python, or other computer programming languages along with the expertise using software such as Microsoft Excel, Access, Power BI, Tableau, and other data visualization tools.

In addition, the incumbent will assist with the continued development and implementation of policies, programs, and reporting to comply with Federal and State laws related to these programs.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Research Data Specialist I or II exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.

g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and / or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.

Working Conditions

Position located in Sacramento, Sacramento County.

The incumbent works in front of a computer system under artificial light in an office setting with long periods of working in a sitting or standing position.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy.

Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises.

The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions.

All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Special Requirements

Possessionof a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leasedvehicle.
