Job Objective :

The Advanced Practice Provider is licensed to independently perform a variety of primary healthcare and intensive care services and clinical procedures that require a high degree of clinical judgment in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients.

Under the oversight from a physician and in accordance with standardized procedures and protocols the Advanced Practice Provider serves as coordinator of the multidisciplinary team in the implementation of an established plan of care and is responsible for ensuring continuity of patient care, communicating the plan of care with patients and families, and facilitating discharge.

Duties and Responsibilities :

A. Trauma Center Administration

  • Rounds on trauma patients with a focus on development and coordination of the plan of care.
  • Facilitates early discharge planning and problem solving of patient care issues in collaboration with the multidisciplinary trauma team.
  • Completes tertiary survey.
  • Reviews diagnostic tests, medications, and plan progress.
  • Assess and reassesses patient needs.
  • Documents in progress notes and writes orders, including medication orders, transfer and discharge orders and discharge summary in collaboration with the Trauma Surgeon.
  • Serves as a liaison between the trauma / stroke patient and the multidisciplinary trauma team.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary trauma / stroke rounds.
  • Responds to trauma activations in the Emergency Department, assisting in trauma patient evaluation and resuscitation / stabilization.
  • Assists the Trauma Surgeon in procedures and performs procedures as credentialed.
  • Oversees Trauma Clinic.
  • Facilitates Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) process. This may include monitoring trends in care and adherence to practice guidelines, identifying complications or deviations from standards of care and PI indicators for further review.
  • Attends Trauma Committee meetings.
  • Participates in research selection, analysis and distribution of findings, and assists with guideline development.

B. Regulatory Duties

  • Collects data required for clinical reports for the Hospital, County, Emergency Medical Services and the State.
  • Facilitates maintenance of licensure and accreditation standards among the multidisciplinary team for Trauma Center Verification.
  • Facilitates compliance with regulatory agency standards, i.e. Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA.

C. Education

  • Continuously stays abreast of the most contemporary standards in trauma / stroke care science.
  • Applies recent Care science and systems innovations to the evaluation and improvement of AVH Trauma Program.
  • Participates in staff education and in-services of trauma topics as requested.
  • Provides patient and family education on injuries, plan of care, and discharge plan as well as any other education as appropriate.
  • Provides injury prevention information to patients and families as indicated.
  • Participates in injury prevention and community outreach initiatives.

Non-Essential Duties :

Clerical support such as phones, filing, and other duties as needed.

Education and Experience :

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with Master’s Degree.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program by the Board of Nursing for the State of California or graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program is required.

Experience

  • Two years’ experience in an inpatient critical care and / or emergency nursing area with a background in trauma care is required.
  • One year’s experience as an Advanced Practice Provider preferred.

Required Licensure and / or Certifications :

  • For NP
  • Valid and current Registered Nurses license and Nurse Practitioner license issued by the State of California is required.
  • Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number.
  • For PA
  • Valid and current Physician Assistance license.
  • Board Certification as a Physician Assistant.
  • Valid and current Basic Life Support Provider is required.
  • Valid and current Advanced Cardiac Life Support is required.
  • Valid and current Pediatric Advanced Life Support provider certification is required.
  • Certification through Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) training within one year of hire.
  • 12 hours of trauma-related continuing education per year.

Key Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled environment subject to long periods of standing and walking.
  • Regular exposure to biological products including blood, urine and fixed tissue samples.
  • Regularly required to bend, stoop, reach, sit, lift, and carry up to 20 pounds.
