Position description

The Department of Surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles is conducting an open search for part-time Project Scientists (non-tenured, assistant, associate, or full level rank) interested in joining the UCLA Endocrine Surgery Research program to advance in the field of endocrine surgery.

The UCLA endocrine surgery research program is a two-year, part-time research experience for general surgery residents who are currently enrolled in an ACGME-approved residency program.

Criteria for the Project Scientist Series :

The Project Scientist Series at UCLA make significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project related to Surgery.

Project Scientists carry out research or creative programs with supervision by a member of the Professor or Professional Research Series.

Project Scientists are expected to have a broad range of knowledge and competency, appointment and advancement depends on technical contributions made to research.

Appointments and duration vary depending on the length of the research project and availability of funding.

Duties : The position will perform independent research under the direction of the Principal Investigator. The Project Scientist will also be responsible for helping to supervise graduate and undergraduate student researchers, preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, and assisting with the preparation of grant proposals.

The program will work with the project scientists to submit their work to national conferences, and will fund travel and accommodations to allow the project scientists to present their work.

Additional Duties :

Ability to work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively. Ability to work independently on scientific projects.

Assist with preparation of grant proposals.

  • Ability to help and train various personnel in data analysis and make significant contributions to the design and execution of other laboratory members' experiments.
  • Preparation of manuscripts for publication in top-tier scientific journals.
  • Required to communicate well with other scientists worldwide.
  • Experience in small animal surgical procedures, if required.
  • Experience of a specific laboratory procedure, data processing as required in the study.
  • The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator and will successfully carry out experiments and analyze the data generated with minimal supervision.
  • Equipment maintenance, if needed

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. The part time annual salary range for this position is $37,050-$65,000;

according to candidate's qualifications and experience, and the division's requirements. The full time posted UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and / or step at appointment.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Applicants are encouraged to seek support for the remaining percentage through their home institution.
