JOB PURPOSE
Coordinating and delivering recreational services in the Trauma Informed Modified Therapeutic Community. The Coordinator of Recreation and Wellness Services will promote the well-being of our residents through planned structured recreational and wellness activities for the 100 bed, OASAS licensed residential treatment facility.
S / he will work in an integrated fashion with other clinical program staff to provide effective individualized services and interventions that meet the health and wellness plans, and treatment plan goals and objectives for residents.
S / he will help residents learn how to utilize their strengths to deal with the many problems related to chemical dependency and develop the skills necessary to allow them to function as valuable members of the community without the use of drugs or alcohol.
SCOPE OF INFLUENCE
- Delivery of wellness and recreation-based services consistent with the modified Therapeutic Community model
- Contributor to the administrative and clinical operations of facility
- Coordination of wellness and recreation-based services
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Direct Services with Credential
- Deliver individual and group recreation and wellness activities in line with modified trauma informed therapeutic community model.
- Monitors participation in all wellness and recreational residential services with appropriate communication and interventions applied for noncompliance.
- Conducts Recreation and Wellness committee meetings with residents in line with trauma informed modified therapeutic community model.
- Coordinate and deliver recreational and wellness services; including onsite and offsite recreation and wellness activities, caseload activities, and follows procedures for investigating safety issues, managing any with appropriate written incident reporting and verbal communication.
Counseling
- Conduct group and individual recreation and wellness counseling sessions with residents.
- Support the residents in developing skills for self-sustaining wellness / socialization
- Utilize strength-based counseling and MI spirit as well as employ effective behavioral modification strategies.
- Supervise and assist residents during recreational and wellness functions
Treatment
- Act as recreation and wellness expert for participation in treatment planning led by the clinical counselor with the support multidisciplinary team
- Communicate any outcomes of individual or group interventions to the clinical team members involved in the residents’ treatment and / or wellness plan.
Administrative
- Provide documented sign in and out logs for recreational activities, including trips.
- Document all interventions and wellness plans in the clinical record as per 820 and CARF standards
- Utilize self-administered screening tools to measure progress towards health and wellness goals
- Dispense metro cards to residents as needed for recreation trips.
- Participate in house meetings and staff meetings, as well as case conference as needed.
- Communicate pertinent information in Staff on duty log
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Participate in weekly coaching and supervision
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Required Knowledge
- Bachelor’s degree in behavioral science or in therapeutic recreation.
- One (1) year of related work experience in a Residential Therapeutic Community setting strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of trauma informed practices, cognitive behavioral treatment, and behavior modification in practice
- Weekend availability required.
- Current adult CPR and First Aide certifications required.
- Leadership and coaching skills to facilitate buy in from various partners in agency, including residential population
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a broad variety of people, including other team members and management.
- Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Familiarity with Electronic Health records.
- Personal Training and fitness experience a plus

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, stand, sit; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard reach, stoop kneel to perform duties
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk with and monitor the residents during outings, which can amount to anywhere from 15 minutes to 4 hours of walking per recreation trip
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work and the ability to observe, perceive, and identify any safety concerns while on duty.
- Light to moderate lifting is required
- Ability to uphold the stress of working with residential clientele who have significant history of trauma, substance use disorder, and mental health conditions.
- Regular, predictable attendance and punctuality is required
