Overview

The Engineer II works closely with a cross functional team in developing NanoString instrument and consumable products. The work is highly interdisciplinary and will involve working closely with scientists, software engineers, quality engineers, and suppliers.

This position will play a key role in successfully guiding the development of small volume fluidic systems including consumables and instrument hardware.

Additionally, this engineer will work with external vendors and assist in the development of the new systems up to and through commercialization and transfer to manufacturing.

Responsibilities

Essential Responsibilities :

  • Develop fluidic instrumentation and consumables for commercial systems
  • Collaborate with internal project team and external suppliers on the development of commercial designs, including contributing to design reviews, component selection, problem solving, and technical input
  • Contribute to system level risk assessment and failure mode analysis to identify key risks then work with design team on mitigations and test methodology to assure product reliability
  • As assigned, lead or assist in failure analysis and troubleshooting to determine root cause
  • Participate in creation of product requirements, specifications, verification documentation, and other product development documentation
  • Create and review engineering documentation such as drawings, schematics, assembly and alignment procedures, etc.
  • Perform fluidics hardware prototyping through development and assembly of breadboard systems
  • Conceive and perform experimental testing and evaluation of engineering designs for system characterization and optimization as well as collaboration with chemists / biologists for assay performance

Qualifications

Requirements :

  • S. or . in bioengineering, mechanical engineering, physics, molecular biology or related field (PhD considered)
  • 5+ years experience working in product development, preferably in the life science industry
  • Experience with commercial fluidic applications
  • A hands-on orientation toward experimentation and prototype development
  • Ability to work both independently and closely in collaboration with a core team
  • Strong understanding of the product development process with experience in consumables and hardware / instrumentation development
  • Knowledge of small-volume and microfluidic systems, components, and fabrication techniques
  • Strong understanding of fluid mechanics and relevant mechanical engineering principles
  • Proficiency in CAD development software (SolidWorks preferred) and flow simulation tools
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience with design / selection of hardware to control microfluidics : pumps, valves, and manifolds preferred
  • Experience designing and engineering manifolds, valves, connections and use of pressure sensor
  • Testing and verification of fluidics systems

At Bruker, base salary is part of our total compensation. The estimated base salary range for this full-time position is between $74,000 and $118,000 and provides an opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role.

The base salary for the role will depend on a several job-related factors, including, but not limited to education, training, experience, the geographic location of the successful candidate, skills, competencies, job-related knowledge and travel requirements for this position.
