The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Under the leadership of the Director of Clinical Services and Training, the Assistant Director of Travel Health will manage and facilitate all aspects of the Columbia Health Travel Health Program.

The Assistant Director will provide consultation, assess travel-related health risks, and advise students on appropriate interventions and best practices to promote health and prevent adverse health outcomes while traveling and studying abroad.

Serve as a subject matter expert on issues related to travel health. This includes being well-versed on a broad range of infections to best guide travelers abroad about infectious disease prevention, health risks, and treatment options.

The Assistant Director will play a critical role in the all-encompassing Clinical Services team and provide patient care during non-peak Travel Health times.

The Assistant Director will work closely with senior clinical leadership and across functional and disciplinary teams to ensure streamlined coordination of Travel Health services for students who are studying and traveling abroad.

This is an essential onsite role.

Responsibilities

Travel Health (75% )

  • Review students' medical history to assess specific health risks and advise on the safety and health risks associated with specific destinations based on CDC (Center for Disease Control) and WHO (World Health Organization) recommendations.
  • Manage pretravel preventive care for students traveling or studying abroad; consult with students about their travel itinerary, recent health developments, vaccine requirements, and current medications;

and assess overall travel-related health risks and needs prior to international travel.

  • Evaluate the traveler's immunization and provide a full array of routine, recommended, and required immunizations, such as Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, MMR, Tetanus / Diphtheria Typhoid, and Varicella vaccines.
  • Provide post-travel assessment and treatment recommendations; develop a care plan for those returning with travel-related exposures or illnesses.

In partnership with the Director, Clinical Services and Training, develop and maintain a returned traveler debriefing program.

In partnership with the Director, Clinical Services and Training, and other senior clinical staff, develop certificated travel medicine competency training and ensure Travel Health competency for clinical staff;

ensure and maintain ongoing training and orientation for clinical providers who support and administer travel health services.

  • In collaboration with the AVP, Director of Clinical Services, Director of Nursing, and other clinical disciplines, manage and facilitate the implementation of Travel Health activities and initiatives supporting the Columbia Health Travel Health Program.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other Columbia Health departments to support travelers' pre-departure, during travel, and post-return.
  • Develop procedures and workflow to ensure streamlined and efficient coordination of Travel Health and related services;

collaborate with the Associate Directors, Clinical Services, Nursing leadership, and the Associate Director of Practice Operations to create schedules to meet all Travel Health appointments and related services.

Arrange the healthcare services for travelers abroad, such as patient hospitalization and repatriation. Provide phone or telehealth to advise ill travelers and provide guidance as needed.

Coordinate with University and Insurance program travel health staff to support medical care, evacuation, and repatriation as appropriate.

  • In consultation with the Assistant Director, Infection Control and Public Health support, create, develop, evaluate, and maintain policies, procedures, and standards for health records management related to Travel Health.
  • In collaboration with the AVP, developing operational protocols supporting appropriate standards and Travel Health Services compliance.
  • Provide Travel Health guidance and expertise to Medical Services staff, including those outside the formal reporting line.
  • Stay abreast of important Travel Health national and international surveillance bulletins, outbreak information, and official governmental recommendations.

Remain current with changing disease risk patterns globally and recognize that the knowledge base upon which preventative and therapeutic interventions are based continues to change rapidly.

Present Travel Health resources and summaries to schools, colleges, academic departments, students, and other key stakeholders to promote travel health programs, preparedness, and resources available.

Direct Clinical Care & Medical Services Support (20%)

  • Serve as a clinical provider during non-peak Travel Health requests and perform direct clinical care unrelated to Travel Health and in accordance with HIPAA / FERPA, Columbia Health clinical standards, and practice.
  • Formulate and monitor Quality Management (QM) activities in collaboration with the Director, Clinical Services and Training and Director, Nursing.

Monitor travel-health-related issues, perform trend analysis, prepare narratives and reports, and make recommendations as needed.

  • Participate in university-wide emergency preparedness, including the prevention of illness and epidemics; serve as a member of AAAHC committees for Medical Services.
  • Create a system to collect, report on, and respond to patient satisfaction and patient feedback related to Travel Health Services.

Performs other duties as assigned 5%

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Nursing (NP) or appropriate clinical degree (MD, DO) is required.
  • Current NYS NP license and DEA certification.
  • Minimum 5 years of directly related experience required.
  • Experience advising travelers with varying complex health conditions; perform pretravel risk assessment and preventive counseling, vaccination, and post-travel evaluation of illness.
  • Expertise in travel-related illnesses, as well as up-to-date knowledge of the global epidemiology of infectious and non-infectious health risks, health regulations, and immunization requirements in various countries.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish credibility and work collaboratively with various levels of staff and across disciplines.
  • Demonstrate evidence-informed decision-making related to specific advanced practice role.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, working with students and staff of diverse backgrounds.
  • The position requires strong computer skills and familiarity with Electronic Health Records.

Other Requirements

  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
  • Experience in primary medical care, higher education, or closely related environments.
  • International Society of Travel Medicine Certification.
