The Communications Specialist, Tech & Policy will play a pivotal role in supporting the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy and Technology’s (CMIST) Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer.
This position will focus on elevating the work being done within the Tech and Policy pillar of the institute, focusing on enhancing the institute's thought leadership and impact on policy and regulation related to emerging technologies.
This role will contribute to various communications activities, including social media management, event support, and content creation.
The ideal candidate will be a highly adaptable, creative, and motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment.
They should have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams. The candidate should also possess strong problem-solving and analytical skills, enabling them to navigate complex challenges and meet tight deadlines.
Social Media Management : Contribute to the management of social media channels, creating dynamic and engaging content that showcases the Tech and Policy pillar and aligns overall with the institute's strategic objectives.
Monitor and engage with the target audience on social media platforms, collaborating with the Communications Specialist (Academics) to identify and share relevant content.
Event Support : Assist in the marketing and promotion of tech and policy events, including registration management, email campaigns, social media campaigns, and supplemental marketing materials.
Provide on-site support for events, including set-up, break-down, note-taking, and live social media coverage.
- Content Creation : Develop dynamic PowerPoint presentations, capture media content (photos, videos) for social media and other purposes, and create visually appealing designs for social media graphics, presentations, and other materials related to tech and policy initiatives.
- Design Proficiency : Demonstrated skills in digital design and layout. Meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that all content is accurate, visually appealing, and aligned with the institute's brand under the guidance of the CSMO.
- Collaboration : Work closely with colleagues across CMIST, participating in brainstorming meetings, to help support the Tech & Policy initiatives.
This includes possible connections with colleagues across the university (Team of Teams).
Project Management : Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, design or a related field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in social media platforms and their best practices.
- Familiarity with graphic design and video editing tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, GIMP, and Capcut, with the ability and openness to quickly learn new software.
- Experience with email marketing platforms (e.g. Constant Contact)
Preferred Qualifications :
- Experience with content management systems and website platforms.
- Proven skill in capturing high-quality photos that effectively convey messages and engage audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to produce engaging and informative videos.
- Having some experience in research, think tanks, or academia is advantageous.
- Understanding of public policy and regulations is beneficial.
