William Paterson University invites application for Coordinator, Animal Care & Safety / Pre-Professional Advisor in the College of Science and Health.
Position begins October 2023.
We seek an experienced animal facility coordinator to oversee research and testing of animals. The coordinator will implement established animal safety protocols for the College and be the Dean’s liaison on IUCAC committee and OLAW reporting.
The individual will also be the point of contact and advise pre-professional students (excluding nursing students) in the College of Science and Health.
The position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Science and Health

The College’s eight departments biology, chemistry, computer science, speech language pathology, environmental science, kinesiology, mathematical sciences, public health, and a newly established School of Nursing include more than 100 full-time faculty who are accomplished teachers and researchers.
The college offers a wide range of hands-on learning opportunities in our expanded and renovated 232,000-square-foot Science Complex featuring smart classrooms and state-of-the-art research laboratories designed to encourage an interactive learning environment.
Duties and Responsibilities :
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to :
- Manage the animal research facility, which includes care for research animals, maintain inventory and records for animal laboratory safety, ensure cleanliness of the facility and that all protocols are followed, report on all data findings as appropriate.
- Serve as Dean’s designated liaison on animal care committees including IACUC and OLAW, and with United States Department of Agriculture USDA and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) offices to ensure adherence to compliance policies.
- Maintain Drug License for controlled substances from State of NJ and properly secure all controlled substances according to established state protocols and regulations.
- Supervise and train research students and student assistants on general animal care and research techniques in addition to equipment maintenance.
- Prepare teaching labs to assist faculty with animal research.
- Advise pre-professional students in curricula appropriate for a career in health care; assist with pre-professional student applications.
- Promote the pre-professional program by forging affiliations with professional schools and associations.
- Secure internship and employment opportunities for pre-professional students; serve on student pre-professional clubs
- Other duties as appropriate for the position.
Qualifications :
Required Qualifications :
- BS in a science discipline; MS or higher degree prefered
- Two years professional experience in a public health, hospital, clinic, or research laboratory
- Apply and receive NJ State Drug License for controlled substances upon immediate hire.
- Ability and willingness to mentor student research in the lab.
- Expertise in animal laboratory safety protocols and handling small animals.
- Knowledge in pre-professional application requirements and protocols
Additional, preferred Qualifications :
Teaching and research experience is preferred.
