Interior Design Project Manager — Role Description
Overview
An Interior Design Project Manager acts as the bridge between the creative / design team and the execution / construction phase of projects. They ensure that design vision is realized on time, on budget, to quality expectations, and in compliance with all relevant codes / regulations. They manage resources and logistics so that clients are satisfied and stakeholders are aligned.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning
Develop the overall project plan. Sequence tasks in the correct order (design, selection of materials, coordination with contractors, installation). Monitor progress and adjust the schedule as needed.
Team Coordination & Leadership
Coordinate team. Ensure everyone knows what they need to do and when. Facilitate communication. Resolve conflicts or delays.
Design Oversight & Quality Control
Ensure that the design intent is faithfully executed : finishes, materials, furniture, lighting, colors, fittings. Conduct site inspections. Ensure workmanship and installed items meet standards.
Procurement & Vendor Management
Source and select materials, furniture, lighting, fixtures. Compare vendors, obtain quotes, negotiate terms, ensure lead times are met. Manage deliveries and handle any issues of delays or defects.
Risk Management & Problem-solving
Identify potential risks (delays, cost overruns, supply chain issues, regulatory issues) early. Mitigate risks. When unexpected issues arise, adjust plans and keep project moving as smoothly as possible.
Regulatory / Standards Compliance
Ensure that designs and installations comply with relevant codes (building, fire, safety, accessibility), permits, and any applicable local regulations.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain all project documentation : contracts, drawings, revisions, invoices, photos. Generate regular progress reports for internal and client review.
Key Skills & Qualifications
Interior design expertise : Good understanding of design principles, materials, finishes, spatial planning, furniture / lighting design.
Project management skills : Scheduling (Gantt charts etc.), budgeting, resource allocation, managing multiple simultaneous tasks / projects.
Communication : Clear written and verbal communication, vendors, contractors, internal teams.
Negotiation : Working with suppliers and contractors to get favorable terms, handling change orders.
Attention to detail : Ensuring design intent, high quality finishing, consistency, adherence to specifications.
Problem-solving / adaptability : Projects seldom go exactly according to plan; being able to adapt, find creative solutions is key.
Organizational ability : Handles logistics, deadlines, overlapping schedules, multiple vendors.
Technical knowledge : Understanding of construction methods, codes, materials, safety concerns. Ability to read and interpret architectural or technical drawings.
Leadership : Motivates and guides teams, holds people accountable, ensures cohesion and meeting goals.
