Position Summary

Registered Nurse care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent, or disabled. Under general supervision are responsible for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

The Registered Nurse also directs and guides patient / family teaching and other nursing personnel's activities while maintaining professional nursing standards.

Collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes.

The nature of the direction and supervision required for this position varies by State and job setting.

Critical Care Nurse (ICU / CCU) provide care to acutely and critically ill patients in highly technical and ongoing monitoring environment.

With life-threatening problems with a varied need, which require extensive medication protocols.

Position Responsibilities

Critical Care Nurses (ICU / CCU) provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.

In addition to general nursing care duties include but are not limited to :

  • Access, plan and evaluate patient care plans while coordinating with all healthcare team members
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through IV) and records prescribed medications Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with policy
  • Provides basic bedside care
  • Monitors and records patient’s medical information and vital signs
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient’s condition. Take samples for lab work, ordering prescribed lab work, and evaluate / interpret lab reports
  • Prepare equipment and aid physician during examination and treatment
  • Respond to life-saving situations using nursing standards and protocol
  • Record all care information concisely, accurately, and completely in a timely manner in the facility's appropriate
  • Applies Hemodynamic, Phlebotomy, and IV protocols
  • Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment and interprets and records electronic displays. Monitors catheters, leads, and tubing for proper placement and functioning
  • Initiate corrective action whenever information from monitoring / life support equipment shows adverse symptomology
  • Acts as a patient advocate by supporting the patient's basic rights, values, and beliefs and communicates to family / significant others appropriate information on the patient's
  • Assesses and coordinates patient's discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team

Other Responsibilities : Completes required orientation. Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures. Follows facility unusual occurrence protocol.

Respects cultural and religious practices of patients. Upholds HIPPA regulations. Punctual and dependent for confirmed shifts.

Depending on the setting, may also : Direct care provided by LPN’s or CNA’s. Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent.

Qualifications

Graduate of an Accredited Nursing Program

  • Current and valid State RN License
  • Current BLS and ACLS (AHA)
  • Minimum of (1) year Critical Care experience
  • Cognitive skills related to the position

Working Conditions

The ICU RN provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols of the healthcare organization.

Because patients need round the clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. The number of patients assigned per shift will vary with facility and specialty.

Nurses will need to spend a considerable time walking, bending, stretching, and standing, assisting with patient transfers.

Nurses must use proper body mechanics and procedure for lifting / moving patients while assisting CNA’s. Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases.

Additionally, may treat patients that may be confused, irrational, agitate and / or uncooperative.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting, or transferring of patients may involve lifting up to fifty (50) pounds as well as assist with weights of more than one hundred (100) pounds
